Also a part of the Pentacrest is the Old Capitol Museum. Bonus-- admission is free to both museums. Fun fact-- this building was (as it's name suggests) the original capitol of Iowa. When it was decided to move the capitol to Des Moines to be more central, the building was gifted to the University. It was the first building and is still the heart and soul of campus.

Restored to reflect the years it served as the last capitol of the Iowa Territory (1842-1846), the first State Capitol building (1846-1857) and The University of Iowa’s first building. Self-guided tour and changing exhibition galleries reflect Iowa’s history, culture and heritage.

If you enjoy history, beautiful old buildings, or just like Iowa, this is a great spot to visit. You'll see the restored chambers where the Iowa legislature once convened. It's quite lovely. Hours are limited.

Iowa City was the capitol of Iowa until 1857. Interested in learning more? Here's the place. Next door is MacBride Hall, which houses the Natural History Museum.
