Black Balsam is lovingly named after one of the most amazing places in Pisgah National Forest (Black Balsam Bald, about 1.5 hour drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway from Sylva). It is an outdoors store that is ok for some gear, but better for excellent take-homes. Souvenirs. Gifts. You name it. This is where I go every December to get gifts for my folks who really love the mountains but don’t live in them. The owner is an Appalachian Trail thruhiker and neighbor.

Great outdoor store that also rents some recreational stuff like stand up paddle boards, tubes for floating the river, ducky kayaks, and life jackets.
