Well, because it's Hearst's Castle! If you don't do a tour, take the time to see the 40 minute film in the Imax theatre "Building the Dream." It's a very interesting short documentary of the history of Hearst Castle. ~Afterwards, take a picnic & go to the beach right across the street (Hwy 1) referred to by locals as San Simeon Cove, but it's official name is William Randolph Hearst Memorial State Beach. This beach is my favorite secret & I love it better than Carmel Beach (which is my second favorite) There is a path you can hike toward the end of the cove that takes you up & thru an enchanted Eucalyptus forest to the point & beyond! Bring your camera!

If you've seen "Citizen Kane" you know that this is one of the world's greatest monuments that any individual has ever built to himself. An truly beautiful one hour drive north along a road that hugs the ocean and zigs inland through bucolic fields and quaint villages.
