Hereford sits right at the heart of the county, on a loop of the River Wye. The golden-stone cathedral, with its medieval Mappa Mundi and Chained Library, is a huge draw – but you can also wander among half-timbered houses and stroll along the Wye. Browse independent shops across the city – they're clustered along quirky Church Street – and explore the Old Market, transformed into an open-air destination for shopping, dining and cinema. For more arty excitement, head to The Courtyard Hereford for theatre, comedy, workshops and more. A fresh generation of chefs in Hereford, passionate about local produce, serves up superlative food. Favourites include fine steaks at The Bookshop, Italian flavours at Cotto and Ponte Vecchio, award-winning burgers at The Beefy Boys and The Burger Shop, flower-sprinkled brunches at Sensory & Rye, traditional flavours with a twist at The Den and The Hereford, and luxurious afternoon tea at Castle House Hotel. A stroll around Hereford can take in a huge amount of what the Marches Capital has to offer. Start with a must, a visit to the Cathedral and see the Mapa Mundi – a year 1300 AD view of the world. Then, head down to the Old Bridge and stand above the magnificent River Wye, and walk along the bank, seeing the cathedral from a different perspective, to Victoria Bridge and crossing over onto Castle Green. Head back into town to take a snap of the black and white timbered Old House and the huge bronze Hereford bull. Grab a coffee in the café culture High Town square (Coffee Cart Co have plentiful seating) before hunting for some fine fashion or antiques in any of the Church Street independent shops. Read more about what Hereford and Herefordshire have to offer on the Visit Herefordshire website.

Hereford Cathedral is home to two record-breakers. Here you can view the incredible Mappa Mundi, the largest surviving medieval map of the world – made about 800 years ago, it reveals how history and geography were understood in Christian Europe in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. You'll also find the biggest chained library on the planet, dating from a time when books were so precious that they had to be locked up! Outside, a statue depicts Elgar leaning on his bicycle and gazing up at the cathedral – he wrote many of his major works while living in Hereford.

Hay Bluff is a prominent hill at the northern tip of the Black Mountains, an extensive upland massif which straddles the border between south-east Wales and England. The mountain sits at the point where the main northeast-facing escarpment of the Black Mountains meets the northwest facing escarpment, the next peak to the west being Twmpa. The flat summit of Hay Bluff which is marked by a triangulation pillar at a height of 677 metres overlooks the middle Wye Valley and the book town of Hay-on-Wye. The hill is largely within the Welsh county of Powys though parts of its eastern flanks lie within the English county of Herefordshire. A popular route up Hay Bluff is to follow the well-trodden Offa's Dyke path that winds gently from Hay town itself to the very foot of Hay Bluff. At a brisk pace it can take about 1 hour to do, one way. Apart from one section of 300 metres, is mostly flat. Pick up Offa’s Dyke footpath from Hay’s Main Car Park and you are on your way!

For guests exploring the Brecon Beacons, Pen y Fan and Corn Du circular walks will exhaust and exhilarate. 45 minutes west of us is an easy-ish and favourite route up Pen-y-Fan. The Storey Arms route gently takes you right to the top of the highest peak in the Beacon Beacons. So you get the bragging rights but have an easier access walk than other routes. The route is a 4 mile circular walk that people with average fitness can tackle. Just before the ascent there are spectacular verdant views over the Neuadd Valley, swirling around your feet. From the summit on a clear day you will be rewarded with views that only the highest point at 886m in southern Britain can offer. Pen y Fan roughly translates as ‘Top Spot’, so that means there are many other peaks and ridges to walk if you have a greater fitness - a stimulating 11 mile circuit from the Storey Arms will allow you to also take in Corn Du (873m) and Cribyn (795m) down to the lower Neaudd reservoir. More walks over the border are available on the Visit Wales website. Please remember the Beacons’ weather is very changeable and the terrain is variable, so do please check before you set out that you can be safe and that you are prepared appropriately.

Want to Canoe? have tailored excursions set by how much time you have to paddle, which means you can explore the river at your own pace. Other canoe establishments (such as Wye Valley Canoes or Left Bank Canoe Hire) have regular services on the four-mile stretch between Glasbury and Hay, and it’s quite special to stop and enjoy a picnic at one of the secluded spots along the river. If you’re not keen on canoeing but want to be by the water, you can take a 10 minute walk down Bakers Lane next to Cromwell House where you will find a spectacular stretch of the river, fishing huts and a beach where you can watch nature do its thing and maybe take a dip (careful now!). Further out, you could spend a gentle afternoon at the river beach in Hay on Wye that locals call The Warren where you can nostalgically skim stones and grab one of the good pork pies from Gibbons Family Butchers. You may even be able to gloat you took the relaxed option - watching canoeists capsize on the gentle rapids at The Warren is a quiet treat.

CYCLING - We think the best way to explore the area is by bike. Drover Cycles based in Hay-on-Wye offer hire of mountain bikes and have good advice on some great off-road loops in the area if that’s your bag, from a green route (easy four-ish miles) to an all-day black route (painful 28-mile loop). If road-cycling sounds more your pursuit then you’ll have to crank the long climb up to the Gospel Pass, which has the claim to fame of being the highest public road in Wales, snuggled between Hay Bluff and Twmpa. It has one of the most spectacular panoramas in the area. You can then head down into the next valley where you can explore the captivating 12th-century Llanthony Priory. The pub isn’t a ruin and we recommend finding sustenance there.

One of my personal favourites and a great pub to walk from (and back to!). The Bull’s Head is a traditional drovers inn – a place to eat, drink and sleep. A traditional Black Mountains pub with a hole-in-the-wall bar. Flagstone floors. Well kept ales. Low intervention wines. Food served all day. And a fire crackling in the hearth. Home away from home. Set at foot of the Black Hill on the border of England and Wales, they serve beautiful seasonal food in a relaxed and welcoming setting. They focus on good pub food with a straightforward wine list, spirits and fine beer selection. There is a cosy bar area to have a quiet drink, a separate restaurant with open fire and a garden overlooking the foothills of the Black Mountains. WALK THE BLACK HILL The Black Hill is one of the most beautiful and impressive peaks in the Black Mountains with some of the most incredible views over the Olchon Valley and Golden Valley. A curry … in a 14 th century house? Before tearing into a naan, we recommend taking a wander around Weobley and enjoy the black and white charm, followed up with a freshly prepared curry in one of its most picturesque buildings. All the usual spicy delights are available at the red garden, or ‘Lal Bagh’. Just 15 minutes’ drive from Cromwell House, with parking at the back of the restaurant.

Run by an expert team who love to showcase local ingredients and create very tasty dishes (and we’ve eaten a fair few!). The Stagg’s Chef Patron, Steve, was the first Chef cooking at a pub to earn a Michelin Star. Their excellent front of house hosts with easy hospitality and makes sure you are always in a warm and fun atmosphere. They are a 20 minutes’ drive away – we very much recommend eating lunch or supper here.

The Bookshop is relaxed, sociable and has a creative flair. It is a great spot for a casual early evening meal after exploring Hereford and its trappings. Steaks, good cocktails and decent coffee. Hereford centre is around 20-30 minutes from Winforton and the main carparks are the best bet for a space. Other lovely places in Hereford include: Moka Bar for a coffee and homemade fare, Ponte Vecchio for a traditional Italian feast, la Madelaine is a French inspired bistro, and the Burger Shop promises a satisfying treat. There are lots of other fine places so do check out TripAdvisor for more.
