Best. Prime Rib. Ever. And the cream of mushroom soup is divine, and I don't even LIKE cream of mushroom soup! This place is en route to Eureka Springs, so it's about a 25 minute drive from the house. But the food is sooo worth the drive. You'll love whatever you order. It's a teeny tiny restaurant, so it's perfect for a romantic dining experience or an evening with another couple.

There are lots of dining options in Eureka Springs, but we love Sparky's the most. I know - it looks like a 50's diner in this photo, but the back of the restaurant is a huge tent for more seating. It's comfortable, winter and summer - and just feels casual and fun. The menu is eclectic and ever-changing, with lots of locally sourced veggies and produce, along with basic burgers and hot sandwiches. But here's the deal: Everything is mouthwateringly good, AND they have a HUGE beer/wine/cocktail menu, too.

Yes, it's a gas station. Yes, it's a 25 minute trek from our house. But the food? Simply delicious and wonderfully cooked! Check their Facebook page and/or call ahead - especially in the off season, to ensure that they'll be open for you. 3147 State Hwy YY, Shell Knob, MO.

Shopping and Dining

This hilly, Victorian town is filled with dining and shopping options. Find a parking spot - there are lots of parking lots all around town - and then take the tram to get from one side of town to the other. It's a fascinating place, and the shopkeepers are genuinely the nicest folks you'll ever run into.

Sightseeing

This place is absolutely gorgeous, year around. Johnny Morris, owner of Bass Pro Shops, etc., originally owned this site, and his magic touch is everywhere. Places that originally had seasonal waterfalls were enhanced with pumps to show off the feature year 'round. Native Dogwood trees were selectively tucked into the native backdrop to dazzle the eye - all without feeling super-fake. You can walk the looong, flat, shaded asphalt path throughout, or ride bikes (rent there, or bring your own!). There's an amazing tram ride that will tour you throughout and take you up into the hills where there are all sorts of animals that you can see up close. They've moved and re-built a historic grist mill, and give presentations on how that process works. (Might sound boring, but was really fascinating!), and they have a gorgeous restaurant on site, very reminiscent of something you'd see at Big Cedar Lodge - because...Johnny Morris! There is a hefty cost for entry, and separate charges for how you spend your time there, but it is super-cool. Check their website for more info.

"Castle" is a misnomer, but this is a quirky, quintessential roadside touristy, fun stop. Last I knew it cost $7 for admission. The fun back story is that Mrs. Quigley was quite the rock and stone collector, and she had BIG plans for her collection. Her husband was not as enthusiastic, nor nearly as enterprising. One day when he left for work, Mrs. Quigley tore down their existing home, and set to work building their "castle" from her rocks and stones. Her creativity was actually amazing, and it's a fun 30-60 minute stop. Pretty much self-guided, save an introduction by the Quigley's granddaughter.

This is truly a gem of a park. Sporting an interesting trout hatchery, visitors can buy trout food for a quarter, and throw it into any of a number of open trout pools and watch the feeding frenzy! The biggest pool is the "lunker pool," where you'll see enormous, colorful trout swimming right beside you in the bluest natural water you can imagine. The Roaring River's water originates from an underground spring that feeds the lunker pool. You can walk the foot path to the very source of that water, and the color is astounding. Take Deer Leap Trail from there, up and around the lunker pool to see the vista. There are lots of other hiking trails throughout the park, and the Emory Melton Lodge nearby is a great stop for a nice, quick meal.

We absolutely love this place. There is plenty of fun for everyone, with thrill rides and calm rides and options. FYI, many of their rides splash in water, so dress accordingly - down to your footwear, and plan to protect your phones. Many rides have lockers right THERE to stash your valuables while on the ride. This is the cleanest, nicest amusement park I've been to. With abundant shade, lots of truly enjoyable foods to try, the BEST Kettle Korn on the planet, and skilled craftsmen and women who enjoy sharing their trades, it's a guaranteed fun day for everyone.

This region of the U.S. is known for incredible caves, and lucky for us - this one is only 13 miles away. It is privately owned, and is a little more "rugged" than some (you really have to watch your step!), but it is fun and very interesting. A fantastic diversion on an extremely hot or rainy day. Of course, as with all tourist stops any more, you'll exit through a gift shop with some fun kitsch and snacks.
