Sightseeing

From the rental house it’s a 14 mile drive south toward Mitchell, IN, and Spring Mill State Park. Step back in time to the early 1860’s. Visit the completely restored pioneer village at Spring Mill State Park. Take a stroll through the village’s 20 plus log cabin structures dating back to the early 1800’s. Interact with and learn from interpreters as they go about “their daily chores” such as rope-making, candle-dipping, blacksmithing, gardening, and weaving. Visit the working limestone Grist Mill. The mill is an original structure that was built in 1817 and grinds corn to this day. Water flowing out of Hamer Cave pours over the enormous water wheel and drives the gears that spin the grindstones. Take a cave boat tour. Have lunch or dinner at the Spring Mill Inn, a 1930s PWA project and vintage period hotel (open year-round). Enjoy local delicacies like persimmon pudding and corn bread made from the grist mill while you’re there. Village Open: May through October. Inn: Open year round with folk music and other special events.

If you love ghosts and are a genuine “Tombstone Tourist,” visit Bedford’s Green Hill Cemetary. (GPS walking tour free to download here: http://www.greenhillbedford.com/ Bedford and its sister town, Oolitic, are world famous as the “limestone capitals of the world.” Much of early Washington, DC is built of Bedford limestone, Many of the gravestones in the Greenhill showcase the unusual talents of several generations of immigrant limestone masons and carvers. The nearly abandoned tiny town of Tunnelton, just 12 miles from Bedford, remains a mysterious place. Trains still run through the mile long brick-lined tunnel, built in the 1800s. Many say the tunnel is haunted by the ghost of RR foreman (Henry Dixon) murdered there by his men, his dead body placed on the tracks in an effort to make the law believe his death was accidental. The tunnel is a very spooky place, word-famous as a site loaded with poltergeists. Watch the YouTube Tunnelton Ghost Channel to get the full scoop. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJMko9ynlRs

Two hours south of the house is the amazing old utopian pioneer village and walking labyrinths of New Harmomy, Indiana. Visionary Johann Georg Rapp and his Harmonie Society founded Harmonie on the Wabash River in 1814. The Harmonists called the town their “neu Harmonie” having left their initial American home in Harmonie Pennsylvania. Its members were Separatists from the German Lutheran Church. This millennial society, waiting for Christ to come, built 180 buildings in the 10 years they were here and many are still standing today. They produced quality products including textiles, rope, barrels, tin ware, candles, bricks and much more using the latest machinery and technology. Because beverages were in demand in neighboring and river towns, wine, whiskey and beer were produced in large quantities. The daily production of whiskey was about 32 gallons and 500 gallons of beer were brewed every other day. The Harmonists applied their shared work ethic to achieve uncommon economic success, but in 1824 moved back to Pennsylvania and built their third town called Economy. This charming river village is a great place to have lunch and visit America’s past.
