From the rental house it’s a 14 mile drive south toward Mitchell, IN, and Spring Mill State Park. Step back in time to the early 1860’s. Visit the completely restored pioneer village at Spring Mill State Park. Take a stroll through the village’s 20 plus log cabin structures dating back to the early 1800’s. Interact with and learn from interpreters as they go about “their daily chores” such as rope-making, candle-dipping, blacksmithing, gardening, and weaving. Visit the working limestone Grist Mill. The mill is an original structure that was built in 1817 and grinds corn to this day. Water flowing out of Hamer Cave pours over the enormous water wheel and drives the gears that spin the grindstones. Take a cave boat tour. Have lunch or dinner at the Spring Mill Inn, a 1930s PWA project and vintage period hotel (open year-round). Enjoy local delicacies like persimmon pudding and corn bread made from the grist mill while you’re there. Village Open: May through October. Inn: Open year round with folk music and other special events.

One the best state parks I've visited. They have caves that you can hike into (just a few yards), as well as a cave boat tour. The Pioneer Village has a working water-powered grist mill where you can buy fresh ground corn meal and see it being ground at the top of every hour. They have historical interpreters in the village and demonstrations of things like weaving and blacksmithing on weekends during the summer. Great hiking trails, etc.

Spring Mill State Park is just twenty five minutes away. There you can visit the Virgil "Gus" Grissom museum (one of the first astronauts), hike one of the dozens of trails, fish or kayak on their lake, enjoy a walk through the 1800's Pioneer Village, or tour one of the park's caves – walking or in a boat. The park has year-round activities.
