Laurium or Lavrio is a town in the southeastern part of Attica, Greece, and the seat of the municipality of Lavreotiki. Laurium was famous in Classical antiquity for its silver mines. The metallic silver was mainly used for coinage. The Archaeological Museum of Lavrion shows much of the story of these mines.

Lavrio is a historical city and Port from the ancient times with several picturesque points. The traveler should visit the archaiological museum, the museum of stones, the old city and the new one that reminds an island, with a lot of restaurants, tavernas, cafes, etc. During the summer a festival called "Thorikia" takes place with interesting concerts, performances and exhibitions. From the Port the traveler could take a boat and visit in 1 hour the island of Kea and come back at night.

Ideal excursion to Sounion and Lavrio. A place known worldwide for the temple of Poseidon and its sunsets. If you visit summer in Sounion, do not forget to wait for the sun to set (and tourists to applaud). Lavrio is a big city and port of the region. It was once one of the most important mines in Greece.
