This monastery is built upon the site of the crumbling church of San Damiano, the starting point of the conversion of our beloved Saint Francis. It was here when praying in front of the cross above the altar, the San Damiano cross, that Christ spoke to Francis through this cross. "Go and rebuild my church". When Saint Clare decided to join Francis and his way of life of prayer, simplicity and poverty, Francis invited Clare to live here. Other women joined Clare, including her sister and mother. She was the first woman to create a religious order for women. The day before she died, the Pope granted her request for the Rule of the Poor Clares. Clare lived here till she died. Now, this monastery is looked after by the Friars Minor. I can help arrange a guided tour by a friar.

Il primo biografo di san Francesco, Tommaso da Celano, nella sua Vita prima, narra che nel 1205 san Francesco d'Assisi dopo aver vagato nella campagna, entra nella chiesetta di san Damiano, nelle campagne di Assisi. Pregando davanti al crocifisso presente all'interno della chiesa, e dopo aver chiesto insistentemente luce per il suo cammino, fede e speranza, lo sente parlare e chiedergli per tre volte di "riparare la sua casa che va in rovina". Questo evento inciderà profondamente nella vita del santo che proprio qui, negli ultimi anni della sua vita, compose il Cantico delle creature.

Questa piccola Chiesa è magica. è uno spazio di meditazione e pace e vi suggerisco di scendere a vederla facendo la bella passeggiata in mezzo agli ulivi e soprattutto di andare in momenti di calma, come la mattina presto o l'ora di pranzo.
