The Castro was one of the first gay neighborhoods in the United States. Having transformed from a working-class neighborhood through the 1960s and 1970s, the Castro remains one of the most prominent symbols of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) activism and events in the world.

[1 of Markus' TOP 10 Things to See and Do in the SF Bay Area] Walk around this historic gay district, and get a drink at the world-famous Twin Peaks bar, which was the first gay bar in the world to stand out and proud--with its bay windows for passersby to see the clientele.

This where I live. Colorful, busy, friendly and centrally located. Smack in the middle of the city, the Castro District borders six residential neighborhoods: Mission District, Noe Valley, Eureka Valley, Twin Peaks, Cole Valley, Lower Haight.

Castro is the historically gay neighborhood of SF. There are lots of shops and restaurants. As the neighborhood has gentrified, it is much more mixed and everyone is welcome.

A unique San Francisco Experience in a beautiful vibrant neighborhood. The Castro is lively with great nightlife and restaurants and is unlike any other place I have seen.
