Together with nearby Meerdaalwoud, Heverleebos represents a clear environmental and scenic beacon to the south of the city Leuven. These two remnants of the large Kolen forest are still one of today's largest Flemish wood complexes. Both were selected as major nature reserves in the Regional Planning Programme for Flanders and belong to the European ecological network. The grid-shaped road pattern links the two woods. Yet the vision on both wooded areas differs.
