Food Scene

Gastronhome began its life in Balham, but later moved up to Battersea — 2014 Balham wasn’t ready for west-end style eating, and probably still isn’t. The restaurant is so very French — rich terrines, steamed turbots, duck cooked two ways — that it’s not hard to imagine being in Dijon, sandstone buildings and all. It is, admittedly, more on the pricy side than much of Battersea’s culinary offer, but everywhere needs its Bob Bob Ricard; there might not be a champagne button here, but there is plenty of it.

The Latchmere is part of a small chain of South London pubs, most of which lie south of the river. It’s a spectacular building, showing some of the modernity that that has kept real ales and seafood boards relevant. Call it contrived, but you’ll find mighty burgers, steaks, and decent fish and chips – not that you should feel disinclined to go full ‘gastro’ with dishes like porcini and ricotta ravioli with walnut pesto on offer. Meat is sourced from their own farm in Hampshire; the atmosphere is warm and unpretentious. It’s cheery stuff.

Yes, another pub. But a pub that rolls happily along pulling a trailer of quiz nights, busy gardens, wood pigeon salads and salt and pepper squid. But hold on. The Lighthouse, which much must have spent a sizeable amount making it look the way it does, also boasts tea-smoked sea trout and crab linguine. Ultimately, it does that clever thing of getting the necessary steaks and fish and chips right while adding fun bits of colour, so that guests who do want to go off-piste won’t be disappointed. Good, adventurous beers come as standard.
