The waterways around Pony Island is great to visit by boat. There are eagle's nests and peaceful channels to boat through to see birds, turtles and other wildlife.

There is an island close to Little Walnut called No Name Island by the locals. It is has a sandy bottom and you can usually see a lot of boats and swimmers there. It is a fun place to swim and not accessible by car.

Look for Bald Eagles
Binoculars are available in the sunroom for viewing bald eagles hunting on the lake. You'll note that they are very big and fly differently than buzzards.

Swimming - No diving or jumping into the lake
There is no diving or jumping off of the island at any time or anywhere on the island into the lake. The lake can be very shallow and as low as two feet in some areas around the island.

Swimming - Wear water shoes and don't climb on rocks
Be careful of very sharp zebra mussels and wear water shoes when swimming around the island. Never walk up or climb on the rocks around the island. The zebra mussels cling to the rocks and will cut your hands and feet.

General Tips and Rules for Turtle Shell Island
- When doing the dishes, please add a tablespoon of bleach to the rinse water
- Make sure to turn off the gas on the grill at the tank
- Do not leave anything behind on the island including inflatables, food, toys, or trash. You will be charged an additional fee for items left behind ($30/item and trash bags are a single item)
- No smoking inside and clean up any cigarette butts.
- No more than 6 people are permitted on Turtle Shell Island at a time. The septic system cannot take it.
- If there is a storm or wind, or before dark, please bring in all chairs and umbrellas.

To Do: Before you leave
- Remove all used sheets from the beds and place on the twin bed in the living room
- Make sure all water is off.
- Make sure all fires are completely out.
- Set the thermostat to 74 degrees.
- Shut all windows and close the blinds.
- Make sure to bring in all chairs and umbrellas.
- Take all trash and recyclables. You can take your trash and recyclables to several locations listed in this guide. Recycling is free, trash is paid by the green bag.

There are two recycling and trash centers around the lake:

There are vending machines to purchase green bags for trash. We recommend keeping the trash and recycling separate during your stay if you are going to use these recycling centers. It makes it easier.
