Barbizon was at the center of a school of painting that emerged in the 1830s and persisted into the 1870s. Its popularity spanned the height of Realist painting and continued even during the Impressionist period.
The village is extremely close to Fontainebleau and worth the side-trip. Its multiple museums house artworks by famous 19th-century painters including Théodore Rousseau and Jean-François Millet. It is also a beautiful place full of gardens and natural vistas.
