Can be very windy. Incredible experience not to be missed. Or hike during the day into the crater. Need to bring drinks, food as little is available.

Watch the crazy surfers on top of Hoopika, turtles on the beach, then enjoy this quaint surfer town. Very unique restaurants, clothing shops, boutiques. It's on the way to Hana but may need time just for Paia. Recommend. .3 hrs.

You really should get the $10 audio guide..download. it tells you where the stops are to see waterfalls, gardens, points of interest. An all day, windy road trip some prefer to take the tour bus so the driver isnt white knuckled and actually sees what the passenger is pointing wildly at! Don't feel bad if you only go to the Black Sand beach at the state park and back. Many do that and still get the basic idea of the road to Hana.
