Food Scene

"We love fresh, uplifting, exciting food; salads, sandwiches, lunches, platters. And of course, we love to cook a hearty breakfast as well. We use green things grown by people from the community who we know and trust. We take care to find producers who truly look after for their livestock. Our butcher is up the road, our halloumi comes from a small organic cooperative. The farmer who supplies our sausages is called Tom and our organic milk comes from Dave’s cows in Somerset. We bake all our own bread using organic flour from a mill in Shaftesbury." - Soulshine Cafe

Located half a mile along the lane from The Cabin and The Pond House, you can book a vineyard tour and a tasting or simply visit their shop to buy some Dorset wines. Furleigh Estate is 85 acres of vineyard, lakes and grazing land surrounded by woodland. The area is teaming with wildlife; buzzards fly overhead; deer, pheasants and partridge roam the vineyard, while heron fish regularly from the lakes to which our resident geese return each Spring. We are proud that all of our wine is made here at Furleigh Estate from our own grapes. Unlike many of the larger English vineyards we do not import grapes from "foreign places" such as Sussex or East Anglia. Our Dorset wines are all made from Dorset grapes. Visit their website for more information or to book a tour.

Celebrated and distinct hotel, restaurant and bar nestled on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, overlooking the sweep of Lyme Bay in the beautiful and unspoilt county of Dorset. Less than three hours from London or the Midlands, it’s a place to relax and recharge by the sea. From the creators of London’s internationally renowned Groucho Club comes an antidote to city life. The perfect getaway, holiday or just a (very) long lunch destination. Inspired by a mixture of classic British Edwardian hotels and the Cape Cod paintings of Edward Hopper, The Seaside Boarding House Restaurant & Bar is a unique collaboration of old and new; lovingly renovated furniture and fittings from the 1920’s to 1980’s, marine salvage, nautical paintings and then touches like a fabulous collection of Peter Blake prints on loan from art dealer Paul Stolper, that fit perfectly with the ageless decor.

"The highest point in Dorset with views between the trees over Devon, Somerset and out to sea. Lewesdon Hill is a fantastic spot for a dog walk. The climb to the top will give your pooch a good leg stretch, and then you can both enjoy an invigorating exploration of the woody summit. " - National Trust

"At 277 metres, this is Dorset’s second-highest point. Pilsdon Pen affords spectacular views south towards the towns of Bridport and Lyme Regis on the Jurassic Coast and further inland to the fertile farmlands and tiny villages of the Marshwood Vale. Pilsdon is one of four hillforts along with Lewesdon Hill, Lambert’s Castle and Coney’s Castle, all within just 10 kilometres of each other." - Royal Geographical Society

"Hidden away in the west Dorset countryside, this gem of a nature reserve supports an impressive list of rare and protected species amongst the intricate mosaic of unimproved wet and dry grassland, scrub, woodland and small copses. A visit to Powerstock Common is rewarding at any time of year... Moving into autumn the site comes alive with fruits and fungi, the former being of importance for the resident dormice, amongst other creatures, and the eerie sound of rutting deer, whilst a wintry stroll at the site may bring sightings of scampering hare, a snipe flushed from the rushy meadows and flocks of wintering thrushes." - Dorset Wildlife Trust

"Iron Age hill fort and downland with views across the Marshwood Vale to the coast A great place for walking, flying kites or simply taking in the extensive views of the surrounding countryside and the English Channel in the distance. The hill fort itself is about 2,500 years old, but originally there were two Bronze Age burial mounds on the summit. It's also an old smuggling spot - in the 18th century, Isaac Gulliver took advantage of the hill's commanding position and created a small plantation of trees to act as a landmark for his ships and help guide them to the coast." Featured in The Good Beach Guide, West Bay has two beaches, East Beach and West Beach. East Beach is a sloping, shingle beach backed by magnificent sandstone cliffs. The scenery is truly spectacular here, the golden cliffs rise 50m vertically above the beach and the views towards Chesil Beach and Portland will take your breath away. TV buffs will recognise this beach from ITV crime drama, Broadchurch. West Beach is a smaller, quieter beach popular with young families, the protective cove formed between the harbour’s Jurassic Pier and the Esplanade’s rock armour groynes making it safe and shallow for paddling. The Jurassic Pier, which is 240 metres long, was significantly improved in 2004. It has wheelchair access and plenty of seating. A restored 18th century cannon can be found on the pier. There’s plenty to do at West Bay, take a stroll around the harbour for an ice cream or fish and chips, climb the coast path up to the top of the cliffs, hire a rowing boat up the River Brit or join a fishing trip out from the harbour, all the ingredients for a chilled out day on the coast. In the summer, a lifeguard services watches over the waters of both beaches and there is an auxilary coastguard. A trip down to West Bay beach is equally wonderful in the winter months; enjoy a blustery walk beach combing and fossil hunting and warm up with a nice hot mug of tea in one of West Bay’s many cafes. If you’re after hygge moments, you’ll find them here!

Entertainment & Activities

"An elegant 1920’s theatre presenting a varied programme of film, theatre, music and comedy. In 1926 a local brewing family, J C & R H Palmer, took the courageous and enterprising step to build an opera house in Bridport. A new venture in every way, but particularly because it was powered by electricity, a rare commodity for many at the time. Generating its own power in the engine room at the rear of the building, it enabled the people of Bridport to experience the wonder and glamour of the new age of cinema, as well as opera and other stage shows. It opened on June 14th 1926 to a packed audience of over 500 people and was appropriately named The New Electric Palace." - Electric Palace
