It is the only one of the doors from the Spanish period that survived in Milan, an ashlar arch in Doric style, commissioned by Philip III of Spain to triumphantly welcome the arrival in the city of Margaret of Austria, his future wife. It is a monumental arch completed in 1596, today in the center of the busy Piazza Medaglie D’oro, along the road that once led to Rome and Lodi. The funeral tram also departed from Porta Romana, the only black tram in Milan (called by the Milanese: 'La Gioconda'), which transported the bodies of this part of the city to the Cimitero Maggiore, the commonfolk cemetery of Milan.

The need for a new headquarters for the offices of the Palace of Justice, which until the 1930s were scattered around the city, led to the decision to centralize the various offices at the old barracks. The structure, in classic fascist style, has dimensions similar to Piazza Duomo, and is certainly one of the most impressive buildings in Milan. Together with Piazza Cavour, they are the two most prominent examples of the lictorian style. I remember the impression it made on me when I accompanied my mother to work as a child!
