A House for Essex is designed by FAT Architecture and Grayson Perry. It is both an artwork in itself and the setting for a number of works by Perry exploring the special character and unique qualities of Essex. The building has been designed to evoke the tradition of wayside and pilgrimage chapels. It belongs to a history of follies, whilst also being deeply of its own time.

There are currently up to 250 seals in the Walton backwaters, a healthy breeding population which has risen from only 5 in 1986. We take you through the backwaters to Oakley creek, known as Hamford Water Nature Reserve, where the seals enjoy resting on the mudbanks. Dogs are only allowed on Private hire trips. Not on public trips. In addition to seals, a variety of birds can be spotted including the Wigeon, Pintail, Ringed Plover, Curlew, Dunlincan, Sandpipers, Gannets and Arctic Skuas. One of our boats is an open vessel and one has a cover. Both are unfortunately not disability friendly. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Mersea Island is an idyllic location found about 9 miles from Clacton, and covering seven square miles, with a glowing reputation for beautiful scenery, oysters and historic charm. Twice each 24 hours, Mersea has a high tide, sometimes this covers the road and prevents anyone from entering or leaving our magical little island. It’s actually a joy to witness nature making us wait, but don’t be tempted to take on the sea, only too often our emergency services find themselves rescuing unfamiliar drivers from a tide which strands their car! Be sure to check tide times and the all-important Strood Cam to make sure you don’t find yourself unexpectedly caught out.
