Food scene

Joanne is a friend (and former employer of me as part-time barista) at this family-run coffee shop & tea room, spread across three floors. It's a focal point for the community in Guiseley, and people come from near and far ~ everyone's welcome! BB or just "Brambles" or "the Bakehouse" is 100% coffee & tea-and-cake-mad. Joanne's husband Tom is a regular too, he's often to be found out-of-hours running up & down the stairs with trays of mugs, usually as informal training for his fell running (he's an uphill mountain runner). Great music, fab workspaces (old school desks from a Secondary School that closed and was replaced by housing nearby), meeting rooms for hire at reasonable prices, the coffee is fairly priced for the quality and it's freshly made on-site. What's more, they run craft and jewellery workshops, baking sessions, family fun events, the Weekend of Words... It's only a 5 minute walk from the house :-)

Pizza & a pint? Burgers & gins? A Tequila Sunrise & a tea? This place has it all, AND is pet-friendly, for pints and flat caps and the local delicacy "pork scratchings" - They even publish their "dog of the week" on Social Media!! Yoga & pilates on the rooftop sun/rain terrace, very clean and comfortable, well-ventilated seating areas, log fires in winter, sunshine from all angles in summer. It's housed in a former HSBC Bank (where I got my first ever bank account to start saving my pennies!!!). Well worth a visit for the architecture and refurbishment alone. Go on, have a drink or three while you're there - the staff are pretty enthusiastic (add a 10% tip to your food or drinks bill, ideally, if you're happy with everything) :-)

Recently voted the best place to live in the whole of the UK by Sunday Times Readers. Stunning Victorian Spa Town - Charles Darwin visited to take the waters that run crystal clear down off Ilkley Moor. Don't forget your hat! See the usual websites for all the best pubs & restaurants, especially the former Daniel's Cafe now called Greenhouse, and Quinta Mediterranean Bar & Grill for food and a great wine list. Oh, and Friends of Ham for all things Mediterranean involving pigs!!!

Stunning, Industrial-Revolution Rich Bradford, where 3/4 of my family heritage and roots are. Fabulous architecture and the best curry in the country.

Sightseeing

Just brilliant - coffee shop by day, bar at night for those who want something stronger for theatre performances, family-focused and community-led. Funding always needed (due to the historic crumbling building), so often events are pay-what-you-can! Go, please, even if for a look around and to drop the price of a cuppa in their donations box :-)

Art & sculpture alongside Leeds’ most jaw-dropping coffee shop & tearoom, the Tiled Hall. It’s inside Leeds City Museum & the Public Library - which is also beautiful & also free! Leave only good vibes, take away just good memories :-))

A classic British “boozer” for reasonably priced pints, wine, gin, whisky etc. Fun for bank holidays or occasions like Bonfire Night (5th November) and a nice circular walk from Cavendish Rd… excellent beer keeping, chatty staff & friendly locals.

Consejos sobre la ciudad

No te lo pierdas

Guiseley = lots of similar streets with the same names!

Take photos / use your GPS watch/phone to retrace your steps. The Station (Pub & Train/Bus Stops) are good central points of orientation. And Victoria Road with the Fish & Chip Shop on the corner. Or use a physical OS map (Ordinance Survey - there’s an app available with landmarks pinpointed, eg PH is a Pub!)
Cómo moverse

Public Transport & Feet!

Use Northern Rail and thetrainline for local trains, LNER for trains to London and Edinburgh or York (offers for booking in advance). Buses (33a/b, 97 etc) mostly leave from the stop outside Morrisons supermarket on Otley Road. Otherwise everything you might need is within easy walking distance - so pack comfortable shoes or boots!
Formas de ahorrar

Leeds: easy to visit walking / by cheap taxi or free boats!

Boat taxis - they’re bright yellow and free!
Qué meter en la valija

Waterproofs, sun cream & a hat!

It’s hilly around Guiseley, and can be sunny one minute, breezy the next - never head out without a drink, headwear, something waterproof, and several layers of clothing!! It’s wonderful ;-)
