Gotthelf is the district where the apartment is. It's a calm district close to the train station and city center. The Schützenmattpark is right around the corner of the apartment. When the weather is nice, everybody enjoys the sun. Children can play on the playground, while adults are reading a book or just sit there watching the storks walk by.

Iselin district is similar to Gotthelf. It's a more calm area but still close to the city center. There are streets with tree alleys and the Kannenfeldpark.

St. Johann is a cool, more urban district to wander around and find some cute little cafés. It's an area where people mostly live, but there's still a lot to offer when it comes to cafés and restaurants. It's also located at the Rhein where you can go for swim and relax afterwards in the St. Johann Park.

Gundeli is a vibrant area right behind the train station Basel SBB. It used to be the worker's district and gained popularity in the past 15 years. There are many little cafés and restaurants. People who live there often say that they don't even need to leave Gundeli as it offers almost everything that they need.

The city center of "big" Basel is divided by the old town where you can find small little shops, restaurants and cafés and the more modern part with the main shopping street, the Steinen street with its many bars and cinemas. Make sure to take a ride in one of the famous "Fääri" (ship that crosses from one side of the river to the other with a zip line. Make sure to bring cash. It costs CHF 1.50 per person)

Ever tried vegan donuts? Drop by this AMAZING place, no matter if you are vegan or not. The donuts are know Swiss-wide in the vegan food scene as they are absolutely delicious! The flavors change each month so stay tuned for the menu you'll find while you are here. Better go there before 4 p.m. (Wed. - Sun.) as they might be sold out quickly.

This restaurant & bar is known for it's special menu. They serve small plates to share, everything with a special twist. If you order a drink you have to mix it by yourself. Prices are a little elevated but not too crazy.

Roots is one of the best restaurants in Basel when it comes to fine dining. The chef believes that the main focus should be on the vegetables on the plate, but don't worry, they also cook meat and fish. They adapt to your needs if you inform them upfront. Booking way ahead is a must! Roots has 17 gaultmillau points and one michelin-star. Therefore be ready for an expensive treat!

Traveling in summer? Bring your swim wear!

If you can swim and feel comfortable swimming in a river, make sure to go for a swim with a "Fischli" in the Rhein. I have a "Fischli" bag at my place that you can use to put your clothes in so they stay dry and help you to float down. The best spot to go in is at the Tingueley museum. Just follow the people walking upwards on the "small" Basel side in swim wear and you won't be able to miss the right spot. When you get out after about a 20 minutes swim you can sit at a Büfette (a small container restaurant) and enjoy some drinks and little snacks. Bring cash as most of them only take cash.

Public Transport

Switzerland has great public transport. Always in time of course just like the Swiss people :) The best page/app to buy tickets is www.sbb.ch. There you can buy all tickets for trams, buses and trains. If you're gonna travel around a lot the same day in the same city always buy a city ticket. That is always cheaper than buying single way tickets. There are also ticket machines on many tram & bus stations and of course on the train station. Not all of them take cards though.

Fääri ride

Basel is divided by the river Rhein. On one side we have "big" Basel and on the other side "small" Basel. A nice way to cross the river is by "Fääri". It's a little boat attached to a zip line that crosses from one side to the other. There are four Fääri's in Basel. Best is to walk up the hill to go and see the Münster church and then go down the stairs to take the Fääri. Make sure to bring cash. They charge CHF 1.50 per person and collect it while crossing the river.

Museums

If you like museums you're gonna like staying in Basel. There are many museums in and around Basel. It depends what you like of course but some of the best are Kunstmuseum, Kunsthalle, Naturhistorisches Museum, Anatomisches Museum and Tingueley in Basel City, Beyeler Museum in Riehen and a must for design lovers, Vitra Design Museum in Germany.

Traveling in winter? Relax in the sauna right at the river.

During the winter months there is a sauna area right at the river bank in the Rhybadhüsli Breite. I haven't been there yet but I assume its a naked sauna (you can wrap a towel around yourself). Apparently that's not very common in other countries apart from Germany and Switzerland so I thought I better mention that so you won't be shocked :) www.sauna-am-rhy.ch
