Sightseeing

Delphi is a beautiful valley with a couple of connected lakes. The Delphi Adventure Centre is located close by. We stop off there sometimes to grab a snack or walk on the grounds. Drive onto Leenane. The drive between Leenane and Louisburgh (Dephi on that route) is scenic, and Louisburgh back to Westport is by the sea.

How to start your day…and the best photo opportunity. (It's not a beach really) 'The Point' at the Quay is great place to take photographs of the reek. An early morning wake up walk. Drive to and park at the playground near the fire station (you pass it on the way to the house) and walk along the greenway to 'The Point' at the Quays...…walk past the boats, past the tall factory, out to the end ‘point’,... and walk back through Westport House grounds for a well-deserved breakfast/coffee in "This must be the Place" at the bottom of High Street.

Westport is a planned town…well the centre of it… and its possible to walk in laps. It’s what local’s do until they bump into someone! There are car parks off Mill Street (two car parks, one with pedestrian access to Bridge Street) and one off James Street with pedestrian access to Bridge Street. Walking around the mall river is relaxing. Walk up to the Fair Green side and look down the length of the river. While you are in town, there is an entrance to Westport House at the bottom of Church Street near the Octagon.

It takes most people a couple of hours to go up and an hour or so to come down. It’s not easy……but my daughter did it when he was 6 years old 😊. There is a car park at the bottom of the mountain, just past Murrisk. You need to be reasonable fit to climb it…there is a reason to most popular tee shirt in Westport is “I climbed half of Croagh Patrick”

If you want to get a view from a height over Clew Bay without the climb…i.e. you can drive to the back of the Reek and walk the last bit of the ‘road’.

This is a sand spit beach – a beach on both sides – with a view of clew bay, Clare Island and the reek )look closely and you can see the Church on top). The inland side of the beach is very shallow and good for kids. The sand-spit is a mile-long - walking over the sand dunes is great fun for kids. Right at the very end is a nice spot for a picnic. Do not be tempted to swim to the island in the very fast flowing current. The walk is over stones for about 100 yards on the middle.

Just past Louisiburgh - first right turn is a really large beach - Carrowmore. Further out that road is a massive beach – Silver Strand.

I expect you know about the greenway – In Mulranny Park Hotel we hired cycles with sidecars when the kids were very young. You can get dropped off near Achill and cycle back should you wish. Most people say Mulranny to Newport is the best bit - you look across Clew Bay to the Reek.

Food scene

Pubs ! My personal favourites: John McGings on high street. No tv ! Music some Friday nights in the pub. Sometimes Mr Whippy (Don’t ask) Dj out the back, Moran’s on Bridge Street – its looks like a shop. Matt Mulloy’s – Westport’s most famous pub. Bridge Street. Great music session in the back bar. Not bad for a quite pint and a read of the paper while others may be shopping. Owned by one of the Chieftains (if you have not heard of them look for ‘The long black veil’ on YouTube). And while you’re at it look up Coda singing

Restaurant’s Difficult to recommend restaurants, but hear are a few: Sage on High Street is consistently good. iL Vulcano, also on High Street, is a mid-range Italian – good for take aways as well. Surprising good take away chips. The Tower’s (at the Quay), is a super restaurant with an amazing view. On the more expensive side. This Must be the Place, is a 9-5 restaurant. Great place for a coffee and sit by the clock. Great vegetarian food and great breakfasts. Christy’s on shop street. A small coffee shop with locals. The Coast (at the Quay). The restaurant of the hotel on the ground floor is always good. The bar in the Knockranny Hotel – outside town, walkable – has a nice view over the town.

Before you leave

When you are leaving It would really help if: 1. You load and put on the dishwasher 2. You strip the beds and leave the sheets and duvet covers in one pile in the Utility Room and the towels in another pile 3. Put the bin contents into one of the bins 4. If the bins are full it would be really appreciated if you dropped them to the bottom of the road, and there is an empty one down there with a ‘John Cusack’ sticker on it, please bring back up

Setting underfloor temperature The temperature displayed is the current temperature for the floor in that area. When you press one of the arrows it shows the target temperature. It will then return to the current temperature. The temperature should be set to 19. Setting it any higher or turning the central control continuous can cause the boiler to overhear and cut out.

Taxis - General

All taxi’s are independent so no one number. See the recent list at the end of this document. It's best to order in advance, and agree your return with the same driver. Sometimes there are taxi’s lined up on Bridge Street.
