Locals call it Children’s playground. This huge newer play park is near to bathrooms( up hill from carousel,), a carousel ( limited hours) , parking lot & street parking options ( enter off Lincoln )and a food truck . The play park has big and little kids areas with structures, climbing, swings and cement slides ( tip: bring some cardboard to ride or pray you get lucky someone else left extra)picnic area with tables uphill past bathrooms or bring a blanket if that’s your style

** Update: replacing fencing and making minor repairs, playpark is closed until July 17, 2022, per signage. One of my favorite outside my neighborhood parks to take big and little kids alike. The walk to hilly park (like Alamo square) pays off in with its sweeping city views. Gated kids play park, hilly grassy areas with climbing trees ( maybe my kids are the only tree climbers) tennis courts and option of steep walk or stairs. Did I mention bathroom near play park? From my place , You can walk over from Divisadero bus line. Parking can be tight in this neighborhood yet there is a whole park perimeter (4 city blocks)plus surrounding streets to find your spot. Can be windy as you are up high, bring a jacket. Close to Filmore on east side

This has been a family favorite of ours for years. Complete with 1920s carousel ( closed for refurbishment until august 2022), play park, food areas, steam train ( check with zoo about schedule ) plus lots of animals to experience. Check current fees and open attractions to set current expectations. With 3 places to buy food, we often opted to pack snacks in the stroller. Beware of furry thieves if you visit the farm and watch your stroller or bring the food with you. As it’s right by the south end of ocean beach, the temperature can be vastly different than our house. Bring a warm layers.

Free museum where you can see the cables that run the city’s cable cars, take a photo like you are on one and learn some history about the cars. It’s also where they both repair and house the city’s cable cars. Hard to find parking yet accessible from a cable car. May be hard to jump back on a cable car in busier days as they may be full.

Complete with an aquarium downstairs, planetarium, penguins, butterfly rain forest experience and plenty of floors of learning goodness. Plenty of bathrooms and two dining options ( ive always preferred the hot food cafe over the center) This paid museum is worth the price. For visitors look at combo passes that might get you in to multiple spot if you are hunting for a deal. Make sure you check out the roof before you leave.

On a clear day, this is a great place to hang out by the base of the Golden Gate bridge. Picnic table and public bbq, sandy beach ( beware: cold water, plus rip currents) and grassy area for whatever activity you like ( frisbee, ball toss etc) bathrooms passed the warning hut to the north end of the path toward the bridge.

Food scene

My first 1st roommate turned me in to this spot when I lived in the Avenues of the Richmond District way back when. This family friendly spot with jukeboxes at the booths has indoor and outdoor dining these days. If you are lucky, they have cheesecake in stock. While parking can be tight, loop around a few block and you will likely get lucky ( especially on Geary). Limited vegan options ( salad and side of cooked veggies ) Call head for takeout.

With a few other locations, this 1950s classic diner location boasts parking and is only a few minutes drive from my home. Milk shakes and burgers plus all your diner favorites. Too bad they don’t still deliver food on skates to your car.
