AS BEFITS THE CITY WHERE the first movies were projected, the Cinémathèque Française is one of Paris’s several film-focused destinations. Established in 1936, the organization dedicates itself to the conservation of film reels, cameras, props, costumes, and memorabilia. But visitors don’t have to be film buffs to appreciate its Frank Gehry-designed headquarters.

FOR OVER A CENTURY THE GALLERY of Paleontology and Comparative Anatomy has been fascinating and terrifying visitors with its massive cram of reconstructed animal skeletons. A STYLISH PARISIAN APARTMENT RENTED by an impassioned novelist with democratic leanings, a violent uprising leading to a power grab by a despot-in-the-making, the clandestine fleeing of said writer dressed as a working man—these elements make for a great book, possibly one written by French literary titan Victor Hugo. But in fact, these are the details of the author’s own life in Paris from 1832 through 1851. Today, the apartment that he lived in during those years is a museum dedicated to the writer’s life, making for a riveting visit within the city he helped popularize to the world at large.

SINCE APRIL 2018, VISITORS TO Paris’ Atelier des Lumières (Workshop of Light) have been able to enjoy the works of great artists ranging from Klimt to Van Gogh. But rather than just presenting the artists’ works, visitors are essentially transported inside the classic pieces of art as the entire cavernous space is transformed by light and sound. This digital art center, the first of its kind in Paris, is situated in what was once a 19th-century smelting plant, the Chemin-Vert foundry. The location provides wide-open spaces for visitors to wander through, while projections on the walls and ceilings create the feeling of being transported into mesmerizing works of art. Each experience, using cutting-edge multimedia techniques, is a feast for the eyes.
