We love the Pandora. It is 20 minutes drive from the Barn and serves great food, has beautiful views with plenty of tables and is a great place for crabbing off the pontoon with children. It also does an amazing carvery on a Sunday. You can book a table or if you arrive early (11.30/12) you can eat in the pub downstairs. The carvery normally sells out by 2pm. There are beautiful paths which follow the route of the river for a walk before or after your food / drinks. Be aware that due to the lovely location by the water, parking is limited.

This is our favourite restaurant in Cornwall! We love thai food and this place is run by thai chefs so the food tastes really authentic. You get individual tables but the service is more wagamamas style in that the items you order are brought out as soon as they are ready rather than starter / main course / dessert. You normally don't need to book. It is located in beautiful St. Ives with perfect clean sandy beaches and the best ice cream, so your food can be combined with a day at the beach or coastal walk. Highly recommend the walk from St Ives to Carbis Bay - stunning views.

A beautiful pub with breath-taking views across the river estuary. The outside seating has recently been re-vamped so they now have patio heaters and blankets which means that you can enjoy the view all year round. The food is consistently good and the staff friendly. Definitely worth booking, and allow time to park as it is on road parking. If you feel like a walk (it is a flat walk by the river) you can park at Boscawen park where there is plenty of parking and walk to the Heron - it would take half an hour at a relaxed pace.

This is our local farm shop, where they grow much of the produce (which is of course seasonal) and rear their own beef. It is about a 30/40 minute slow walk from the Barn, and they sell lovely coffee / tea and generally have a different cake or quiche on offer each day. Highly recommend.

This is my most regular take away spot in Truro; I love it because there are lovely healthy options as well as more decadent choices, and everything is made from scratch every day. The owner was a former contestant on Masterchef. Great coffee, and highly recommend the Cinnamon and Tahini Buns - if you go in first thing they are likely to be warm!

This is about 35 minutes walk from the Barn down a footpath into the village. It is a lovely traditional pub serving good food and local ales - definitely worth booking as it gets busy!

This is a street food option in Newquay Harbour - the food is amazing and you sit outside overlooking the harbour. Perfect for those with small children, who can play on the beach below where you sit while you are waiting for your food. There are a number of vendors there, including fish, pizza, curry, donuts etc so each member of your party can choose what they like but you can all sit together. Its only open April-October so its worth checking their website to check availability outside of these times.

St Ives has it all - stunning beaches, great walks, and lots of individual art / home shops for you to peruse with an ice cream after your beach day. There is also the Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth museum which are popular with visitors. Be aware that in school holidays St Ives will be busy, so it is worth getting there early so you can park, it is a 45 minute drive from the Barn.

In our view one of the most beautiful beaches in Cornwall, with stunning views as you drive down to it. There are a few lovely places to eat there so you can grab some lunch (highly recommend the Beach Hut, but would definitely book) and there is a stunning coastal walk which you can get to via a path behind the Watergate Bay hotel. A go to for us on family birthdays and celebrations.

Newquay has got a reputation in recent years for being the stag / hen do venue of the south west. This is slowly changing with the introduction of some amazing places to eat (Pavillion, and in the summer newquay harbour has street food every evening which is outstanding) and the beauty of the beaches cannot be debated. Highly recommend Fistral beach (great for surfing) but for families there are some good rocks to climb, and you can eat at The Stable (pies and pizza) or Rick Stein's fish and chips. Well worth a walk to the Cribbar from Fistral Beach - a famous challenge spot for surfers where the biggest swells can develop but great to sit and look at all year round. We haven't eaten there for a while but the views from Lewinnick Lodge on Pentire headland are breath-taking, worth popping in for a coffee.

Porthleven is 30 minutes drive from the Barn towards Helston, and is a favourite of ours on a day off. There is a coastal path from the harbour and the beach is to the left of the harbour, which when there is a swell, is brilliant to sit on and watch the surfers. There is a really foodie feel to Porthleven with the Origin coffee roastery who now do some food I understand, a great pub and a restaurant called Kota Kai if you like asian food. Definitely worth a visit.

Mylor harbour is about 20 minutes from the Barn. You can park in the car park on the left as you drive down towards the water. We go here often and from the harbour, with the water on your left, walk along the beach and cut up onto a path which goes through the fields and you can keep on walking until you get to Flushing. Love the walk and it tends to be reasonably quiet. Mylor cafe is open all day and has an extensive menu, lovely food and great views across the Harbour.

This is walkable from The Barn (30/40 minutes) and is a great place to get a coffee, hire bikes and cycle along the Bissoe cycle path which stretches from coast to coast. You can cycle to Devoran in less than half an hour which would be the closest access to the water, and its pretty much flat all the way! If you keep going through Devoran, you can cycle with the water alongside you all the way to Point. The Quay Inn in Devoran serves good food and great local ales so could be a good stop off point, but would recommend booking as in school holidays it will get busy.

Porthtowan is probably one of the closest beaches to the Barn, it takes about 20/25 minutes to get there. There is the best ice cream shop (Moomaid of Zennor), great rock climbing for the children, some good places to eat and even a park! We went here a lot when our children were younger, highly recommend.

Just an absolutely stunning beach about 30 minutes drive from the Barn. There are huge sand dunes here so really fun for children to run up and down, and there is a river which runs alongside the beach for those who want to paddle but don't want to brave the surf. It is a good length beach so on an overcast day you can still enjoy a good walk with some fantastic views. Definitely recommend stopping in at The Baker's dozen as you drive through Cubert on your way to Holywell - it is run by the family of one of my close friends and they do great coffee, cakes and other amazing baked products!

Trelissick is probably our favourite place for a fairly local walk. If you are National Trust Members you can park for free, and you can either do the circular woodland walk (about 3K so doable with children with the promise of an ice cream!) or you can go and have a look around the beautiful tropical gardens. There is a great shop there, lovely café and even a gallery selling items by talented local artists.

City/town information

Truro is only 6/7 miles from the Barn (15/ 20 minutes away) and is Cornwall's only city. I know I am biased but Truro will always be a special place for me as I spent most of time here growing up, and it is our go to town for everything. There is a Marks and Spencer, Waitrose, Sainsburys, Tesco, Aldi and Lidl (all the bases covered) if you want to do some food shopping, and there is a lovely farmers market there in lemon quay on a Wednesday and Saturday all year round.

Falmouth is 6 miles from the Barn, and boasts the third deepest harbour in the world, and as well as being a student town, it has some beautiful beaches (recommend Swanpool and Maenporth) and there is always plenty going on in the town. Falmouth week runs from the 5th to the 14th August which is a great time to visit as there are lots of events planned. For children and adults alike, on a rainy day, the national maritime museum is worth a visit, and in Events Square (where the Maritime museum is) there are some great places to eat with lovely views across the harbour.

We LOVE Newquay! Beautiful beaches and it is slowly moving away from the Hen / Stag do capital and now has some lovely individual shops, and great eating places. Due to its popularity it will be busy in the summer months so I would recommend parking in Tregunnel Car Park Opposite the Fire Station - it is huge and only a 10 minute walk into town, but saves the stress of driving in and out of several car parks.
