Franklin Barbecue produces some of the best brisket on the planet, and the line forms early at this lunch-only spot. James Beard award-winner Aaron Franklin seasons and smokes his brisket to juicy perfection. It’s so good that people queue up and sometimes wait four hours for a taste. The line has become an experience in itself, as hungry patrons arrive early in the morning with chairs, drinks and a willingness to chat with strangers. Not a fan of lines? Other local favorite restaurants La Barbecue and Leroy and Lewis won’t disappoint. Or....ask us about hiring a UT student to stand in line for you!

The staple in every Austinites’ diet! The tacos here are big, juicy, and iconic. Whether you go down the breakfast route (such as the Chorizo, Cheese and Egg taco), the Veggie route (like the Fried Avocado taco) or the Taco of the Month, Torchy’s will hit the spot (especially if you order a margarita, too). The chain’s location on South Congress, as well as its latest opening at Oaks in Slaughter Shopping Center (its 100th location), are especially funky and perfect for all of your social media needs. And there's one in Belterra Village, about a 4 minute drive from the cottage. Have one, or many!, for us!

Veracruz All Natural sets itself apart from the city's other taco slingers thanks to super fresh ingredients. The Migas taco has a cult following, and for good reason; the fresh tortilla stuffed with eggs, tortilla chips, avocado, pico de gallo and cheese will make you a fan too. Try a fresh aqua fresca to complete your breakfast, and you’ll see why they’ve earned a loyal following. There are many locations around town, by the Tarrytown location is our favorite - but check hours as they close early.

In so many cities across the US, tapping into well-preserved wilderness requires a trip outside of town. Not in Austin. That’s largely thanks to multiple green space preserves, but largely due to one: the Barton Creek Greenbelt (lovingly referred to by locals as the Greenbelt), which spans 7.25 miles of dense forest, limestone cliffs, shallow swimming holes (connected by the creek’s flow) and hike-and-bike trails. The public property is populated year-round by mountain bikers, hikers, and rock climbers. And in the summer months—pending enough rainfall—it is incontestably the most magnificent place to swim within city limits. Whether you hit up the super-popular Campbell’s Hole, the gloriously gushing Sculpture Falls, or the relatively secret Lost Creek site, the mind is always put at ease by way of immersion in what sometimes feels like an impossibly secluded oasis adjacent to some of the city’s busiest sections (many of entry points require a bit of Google research to locate). If Austin’s contemporary urban utopia didn’t already have you hooked, this slice of natural paradise embedded within ought to do the trick.
