Where to swim

Specifically the reserve by the Clutha River off of Highway 8B. The River is beautiful and warm and perfect for a hot summer dry day. I would not recommend trying to swim down by the 'lake' area in the historic district as it is muddy and not very pleasant.

The Historic District

Plenty of history and local shops - check out the ruins of the old Athenaeum Hall and Catholic School. There are 4 churches surrounding our house. One of which is now a cinema. You are welcome to visit inside the Catholic Church and the Prebyterian Church. Take a walk along the track to where the Clutha and Kawarau Rivers meet. There are preserved buildings with creepy manequins, but if you don't mind the static people, you can get a sense of how the town once thrived before the flooding caused by the Clyde Dam project. On Sundays they have a local farmers market.

Where to have lunch/brunch

This is where all the locals go for lunch. Excellent value - recommend the toasted sandwiches, eggs benedicts, burritos and coffees. Lovely gift shop and if you live close by, beautiful garden centre.

Walk around the corner to the historic district. The setting is stunning. Sit outside by the river or inside and enjoy the scenery. The food is basic Kiwi with an attention to delicious coffee and delicious cakes. I would recommend the roast beef sandwich. Not the place if you're really hungry. Bill (owner) also has a wonderful selection of old photographs to give you a sense of what Cromwell once looked like.

Where to go for Dinner

Surprisingly delicious pacific-Mexican food. It's tucked away in the Cromwell Mall, but the food is worth it. Relatively expensive. Recommend the Tacos especially.
