On the Doorstep

Curbar, Baslow and Froggatt Edges offer a spectacular walking route where you can view both the Dark and White Peaks. These three gritstone edges are part of an almost continuous line of cliffs running from Stanage Edge down to Birchen Edge at the southern end. These Edges once famous for millstones, are now known as great places to rock climb. There are over 200 rock-climbing routes on Curbar Edge alone, making the edges a mecca for walkers and climbers alike. For walkers, Baslow Edge also offers interesting features including a memorial to the Duke of Wellington, a giant rock called the Eagle Stone which in years gone by the young men of Baslow used to show off their prowess and fitness for marriage by climbing to the top! Top Tip - Start or end your route at Curbar Gap car park, just up the road from the property. Here you will find a great refreshment van called Jolly's that is frequently at the car park serving some fantastic cakes, a lovely treat after a long walk!

Nearby is the village of Eyam, famously known as the plague village. Although the Plague came to Curbar in the 1630s (a little known fact!) Eyam is the village remembered for its unique response to the outbreak of plague in 1665 as the village placed itself in voluntary quarantine. Eyam museum is great to place to find out more about the plague story and the history of village, there is also Eyam Hall, built in 1676 in a Jacobean style. The house is open to visitors and next door there a small craft centre, which is also worth a visit. There are many great walks around the village and it is lovely just to wander around as many of the buildings also have plaques giving details of their history and the part their inhabitants played in the Plague saga, notably the Plague Cottages where the outbreak began and the Riley Graves can also be visited.

Castleton is one of the most popular destinations for visitors to the Peak District, it has an array of natural and historical features both above and below ground, and is surrounded by superb walking country. High above the village stand the imposing ruins of Peveril Castle. To the west of Castleton lies Mam Tor offering amazing views and fantastic walking on the ridge. Castleton is most well-known for its four caves, each offering a different experience to the visitor, Peak Cavern, Speedwell Cavern, Treak Cliff Cavern and Blue John Mine. The caverns are a great activity for kids and when the weather does not cooperate for outdoor activities.

Walk around the stunning house and relive the history of the many Duke's that have added their own stamp to this remarkable house. Then wander through the landscaped gardens or if you have children why not visit the farmyard and adventure playground - enjoy a coffee whilst they burn off some steam.
