Parks & Nature

You get a wonderful panorama of the city from the top of Arthur's Seat. It is a dormant volcano that is a natural landmark in Edinburgh. You can walk there (head straight down the Royal Mile) or jump on a bus. It is around 45 minutes to the top - worth it on a good day or for some fresh air and exercise.

Cramond village (it's called a village but is now part of Edinburgh) makes for a lovely and scenic day out. You can wander along the river and then along the beach and, if the tide is out, walk out to Cramond Island in the firth of forth. Be careful though, you need time to walk back to the mainland again before the tide comes in! Great place to see the iconic forth bridges.

What other capital city has a huge park (that used to be a loch where witches were drowned!) right in the centre? With Princes Street on one side and views of the castle, this is a great place to chill out after some shopping. Guaranteed to be busy on a sunny day!

This hill provides great views over Edinburgh without too strenuous a hike to the top. Calton Hill is one of Edinburgh's main hills, set right in the city centre. It is unmistakable with its Athenian acropolis poking above the skyline. The acropolis is in fact an unfinished monument - originally called the "National Monument". Initiated in 1816, a year after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, it was meant to be a replica of the Parthenon in Athens, as a memorial to those who had died in the Napoleonic Wars.

Everything Else

The Dean Village is a tranquil historic village on the Water of Leith, only five minutes walk from Princes Street. In the past the village was the centre of the milling of water mills and the remnants of the industry can still be seen today. Look out for mill stones and carved stone plaques with baked bread and pies. The most striking building in the Dean Village is Well Court, recently restored with the help of Edinburgh World Heritage. Built in the 1880s as model housing for local workers, it adds to the picturesque charm of the area. A short walk from the village is the Dean Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art. Both impressive classical buildings in their own right, now converted to their use as art galleries. You can walk here along the Water of Leith (about 1 hour), get the 36 bus from Broughton Road, or walk 5 minutes from the west end of Princes Street.

Drinks & Nightlife

It looks like a barber's shop from the outside, but head inside, work out how to get past the bookcase and you will be served up some of the best cocktails in Edinburgh. Quirky, trendy and very well thought out, this is a great place to go for a night out.
