Buskett (10 minutes by walk), was historically the hunting grounds for the Grand Masters of Malta. Today it is a beautiful little forest, with a large variety of trees and plants, some hundred of years old. The place is iconic to ravel in some thoughts, go for a brisk walk or simply enjoy a picnic.

What can I say: stunning views!! This is one of the most beautiful places to have a leisurely stroll or fitness walk, usually accompanied by a fresh breeze. If you get peckish, you can always stop at 'The Cliffs' for tea or a full meal.

The Blue Grotto is located on the southern coast of Malta, west of Wied iz-Zurrieq facing the little deserted islet of Filfla. The site got its name from a British soldier who thought that since the area looks like the Grotta Azzurra in Capri, it deserves the same name, and in fact Blue Grotto is the equivalent for Grotta Azzurra in English. The site also features in the film Troy (2004) starring Brad Pitt. The location of this fascinating natural grotto combines with sunlight and the surrounding chain of caves to reflect the phosphorescent colours of the submerged flora and the deep dark shade of blue of the sea.´ Some caves, including the Blue Grotto, which is the biggest cave in the area, can be reached by boat from Wied iz-Zurrieq, from where you can also enjoy superb views of Filfla and the surroundings. The ‘frejgatini’ boats depart daily between 09:00 and 16:30 weather permitting, (apart from Christmas and New Year) and cruise for about 25 minutes before reaching the caves. A visit to the Blue Grotto is a must; however, the site can get extremely busy during summer. To enjoy the caves at their best, go early in the morning when the sun is lower in the sky and the sea is calmer. In case that the water’s too rough, or you don’t have enough time for a boat trip, there is a viewing platform on the road leading to site, where you can also enjoy this natural wonder.

St. Agatha's crypt and catacombs is amazing. The museum upstairs is quirky, but the crypt is fabulous. The history is fascinating and the frescoes are a must see.

Directly from the poster: "Malta’s Only Dark Walk Attraction The Mdina Dungeons are located beneath the Magisterial Vilhena Palace just inside the main entrance gate to Mdina, at the first turning on the right. Here in these series of secret underground passageways, chambers and cells a number of events, and the often mysterious circumstances surrounding them, have been recreated to portray events from the dark side of Maltese history. From Roman times to the Arabs, the Knights and even Napoleon, you will find episodes and characters from the ancient past portrayed in startling realism, revealing stories sometimes too dramatic to be believed. Whilst you wander at your own pace, you will discover at every turn Drama, Mystery and even Horror from dark forgotten days in an atmosphere of an authentic Medieval Dungeon." Sounds like a fun thing to do on a rainy day :)

Shopping

A new minutes by bus, Ta' Qali Crafts Village is the ideal spot to shop for unique gifts for family and friends (or for oneself). Most items, such as the unique Mdina Glass, hand-made lace work, and various other Maltese products are made within the complex itself. You can see the artisans at work, shop around and stop for coffee and some pastizzi to recharge your energies within the complex itself.

This is much more than a Cafe - Crystal Palace aka 'is-Serkin', is an iconic pastizzi place which has handed over tradition from generation to generation. They call it the shop that never closes. The sign outside says ‘Crystal Palace Tea and Coffee Bar’. This traditional little bar on the outskirts of Rabat, just around the corner from the Roman Villa and a five-minute walk from our house and two-minute walk from the entrance to Mdina, has been around for over 100 years. Its name is somewhat more recent – dating back around 60 years when it was a popular meeting place for British troops stationed in Malta.

Presenting an ethnic mix of traditional cuisines from India, North Africa and the Mediterranean, Sharma is situated in the heart of Mdina. The place itself is a historical building of the fortified city, with beautiful features and baroque decor. Live music is generally happening, and if you mange to get there before the setting of the sun, you will have the chance to witness some serious 'hmura'.

Great food and great views. The place serves a cafe and bistro menu and even afternoon teas. It is part of a museum displaying tapestries and liturgical vestments from St. John Cathedral; the old Mdina Seminary was officially opened and renamed the Mdina Cathedral Museum in 1969. It is a great venue to have a relaxing meal with family and friends

St. Paul’s Catacombs are some of the most prominent features of Malta’s paleochristian archaeology. The archaeological clearing of the site has revealed an extensive system of underground galleries and tombs dated from the fourth to the ninth centuries AD. The site that is currently open to the public comprises two catacombs out of the 24 in the St Paul’s cluster. The main complex, covering an area of more than 2000 square metres, is so far the largest catacomb ever to be found on the island. It is large enough to have served as a communal burial ground in successive phases of Malta’s history.

This is a must see for history buffs - the place depicts Roman Life in Malta. The museum is very well laid out with viewing cabinets displaying various Roman artefacts and there is also plenty of information boards explaining in more detail of Roman life on Malta and how the Roman remains came to be discovered.

A cheap ticket usually gets you underground through huge areas of war shelters and ancient catacombs, once, gratefully above ground, scan your ticket (don't lose it) into the museum, where a crazy collection of glorious artifacts is slung into side rooms with other treasures better displayed.

Totally old School. If you want fancy displays, interactivity, this is not the place for you. Whilst a bit dry and dusty in places, the museum is a truly educational break. Special mention goes to the top floor, showing the wealth of bird life you could expect to see on Malta.
