Wincheslea Beach is a gorgeous unspoilt sand and pebble beach. At high tide, you can step from the shingle and be waist high in water in seconds. At low tide, you have miles of beautiful sand to walk on - and at times, you'll have the whole place to yourself. Behind the beach is the breathtaking Rye Bay Nature Reserve - a unique landscape of shingle and lakes; full of exotic birds, Romney sheep - and quite a few friendly horses !
Further inland (half a mile) is the impressive Camber Castle - built by Henry Vlll - and formerly on the beachfront - before the seas receded ( both Rye and Winchelsea Village were once surrounded on three sides by the sea and their maritime heritage dates back to Norman times.
To defend the area against frequent attacks from the French, Winchelsea & Rye became ‘antient towns’ of the powerful Cinque Ports Confederation.

It is a beautifully preserved medieval gem - and a wander around the 'citadel' surrounding St Mary's church is magical - with far reaching views across the marches and the sea (Rye was, at one point, surrounded on 3 sides by water).

Rye

The Sussex seaside town has gone cool! It’s about a 15 minute drive and there are so many great places to shop and eat - mainly in the Old Town around the Contemporary Art Gallery and in the Twittens (lanes); everything from cream teas to fresh seafood, Thai book cafes and gourmet pub food. The Old Town is the best place to visit (park in 'Rock-a Nore'); and a walk through all of the fishing boats on the Old Town Beach is a great experience. Teh Old Town itself was the location for the TV drama 'Foyles War' - and remains wonderfully unspoilt.

Hastings Old Town
The Sussex seaside town has gone cool! It’s about a 15 minute drive and there are so many great places to shop and eat - mainly in the Old Town around the Contemporary Art Gallery and in the Twittens (lanes); everything from cream teas to fresh seafood, Thai book cafes and gourmet pub food. The Old Town is the best place to visit (park in 'Rock-a Nore'); and a walk through all of the fishing boats on the Old Town Beach is a great experience. The best fish and chips (ever!) is available from Marino's in The Mint. The George Inn has a great Brasserie style restaurant and the Standard Inn (The Mint) is great for pub meals. A few hundred yards outside the centre (and well worth the 5 minute walk) is the Globe Inn Marsh - a quirky and fantastic place with very good food.
There is a fabulous Jazz and cocktail bar- The Grapevine in Rope Walk, and the old bar at the rear of The Mermaid (Mermaid Street) is ancient and atmospheric.
