Food scene

Don't miss – it's the best food around by far! Everything is delicious and beautifully presented. Save room for their soft-serve sundaes. Veg/vegan friendly! The Sugarpine Salad is incredible, beautiful, and quite hearty for a salad. There are picnic tables or it's a quick walk down to the beach at Glenn Otto park. (Note: dogs are allowed at Sugarpine but not in the park) It's in a cute building right along the river and by the historic bridge that used to be a gas station in the 30's, then a bait shop. Parking can get NUTS on weekends, especially in summer. Order online and pick up on the patio or via the drive-thru. (Check online for the latest protocol since COVID changes everything)

A great fine dining option in a beautiful building on the river. Reservations recommended but not usually required. Ask for a table by a fireplace!

Classic locals bar with good burgers (both meat and veggie) and killer tots. Open late, has a big patio, and easy to take to-go orders to picnic tables in the part for a more private picnic. Only two knocks: 1) patio is not dog friendly, 2) be prepared for sub-par mask compliance from fellow clientele if you choose to dine in

Totally mediocre Italian for a hell of a deal. It's one of those places where everything comes with soup or a salad and they bring free bruschetta for the table. A good place to go after a hike when your expectations are low and your appetite is big.

Hiking

Cute little free museum with local history. There's a 2-3 mile hike that starts right behind the house. It's nothing spectacular compared to those in the Gorge, but it makes for a nice evening stroll with some fun elevation changes. (Can't beat the 3 minute drive to the trailhead!) The prettiest bit is at the end where a small footpath follows Beaver Creek at the bottom of a small canyon. Stop and read the sign next to a picnic table about a 1/4 mile up the trail to learn how this footpath was used by indigenous people and later, by pioneers following the Oregon Trails. Note that a washed out bridge makes this a shorter out-and-back despite some older trail reports calling it a loop. (Kat can provide an up-to-date trip report if you're interested!) https://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide/Lower_Beaver_Creek_Canyon_Hike

Great little hike with a lotta bang for very a low-effort buck! Beautiful double-tiered waterfall with a twist, cute wooden bridges over the river, and old growth trees. Easy, short, mostly paved trail with stairs and handrails at the steepest points and benches to rest along the way. A great choice for young kids or older folks. (There's also an alternate, handicap-accessible paved route that doesn't go down to the falls but offers nice river/gorge views.) Hardcore hiking enthusiasts would not consider this an actual hike — more of a nice walk in the woods with some elevation — but it's still worth doing because the falls are so nice. As with any trailhead in the gorge, do not leave ANY valuables in your car. (I even leave my glovebox open to show there's nothing inside.)

Classic Gorge hike with a spectacular panorama and interesting rock formations at the top! This is a local favorite and a must-do for anyone who loves nature. This one can get very busy with limited parking, particularly on weekends so arrive early. It's a moderately challenging but quick 4.5-mile hike. Bring plenty of water for you and any pets. The trail does cross a stream but it's largely inaccessible. **Note: Despite the popularity car break-ins are unfortunately common at this trailhead. Don't leave ANYTHING of value in your car.**

Sightseeing

Pretty sure I don't need to tell you to go here. It's the darling of the Columbia River Gorge and worth seeing — but locals cringe at the thought of finding parking and fighting the summer crowds. It's worth a visit, but save yourself time for some of the more secluded and equally impressive waterfalls too! Reservations are now required during summer to limit traffic. (Bike traffic is not limited) Full details here: https://www.recreation.gov/ticket/facility/10073376

If you've never been to a McMenamins, you're in for a treat! The McMenamins brothers buy up save historic properties from the wrecking ball and turn them into sprawling entertainment destinations. Edgefield used to be a 'poor farm' and now includes multiple bars and restaurants, a winery, a glass blowing studio, a golf course, a spa and soaking pool, hotel rooms, a movie theater, a renowned music venue, gardens, etc — and it's all beautifully decorated with whimsical paintings and architecture. A really fun place to explore!

Historic mountain lodge with epic views both of Mt. Hood/Wy'East summit to the North and a sweeping panorama looking down the Cascades to the South. There's nothing quite like cozying up to their gargantuan stone fireplace and sipping an equally massive hot cocoa on a winters day — or sipping a cold local brew on their back deck after a long summer hike! The lodge was built by the WPA during the Great Depression and features incredible craftsmanship and many interesting historical displays. You may recognize the exterior from the horror flick The Shining — which they play for free by request in their own movie theater/game room. Check for COVID closures prior to visiting!
