Beach

This is the beach in the harbour. If you walk down the right-hand side of the harbour, you will see the breakwater jutting out to sea with the lighthouse on the end. The beach is just on the other side of the breakwater and is stony. There is a café and you can climb over the rocks at the far end when the tide is out. This is a great beach to go paddleboarding from if you have your own as you can park and get straight in the water and paddle round to Berry Head. There are public toilets here, you can access the disabled one with your bank card or use coins on the other.

The closest nice beach is St Mary’s, you can walk it in about 25 mins or drive to the car park that is right next to it in a few minutes. If you have a campervan you will have to park on the dry verge just before the barrier as there is a height restriction. From the car park walk left down the coastal park with the sea on your right and go down the stairs. It is never busy, even in the height of summer and for that reason, it is our favourite beach, half sand, half stones. Watch out for jellyfish though. Please note you have to walk down some really steep steps to get to the beach so not great if you are in a wheelchair or have small children in buggies. Also not ideal to try and get a paddleboard down there unless it's inflatable. No toilets or facilities here, it’s a proper Devon beach.

Another really nice beach. This one has a walk from the car park just under a mile. Again no toilets or facilities just a nice unspoilt coastline away and a nature reserve. If you run, this makes a lovely circuit.

More commercial but not like the larger beaches on the other side of Dartmouth. It’s sandy with a few rocky sections. There are two cafés and on the beach a watersports centre where you can hire paddleboards and kayaks. It’s an amazing day out to paddle down the coast for a few hours. Go to the right or you end up in Paignton, which is not half as beautiful. There is a big car park, height is restricted so just be careful if you have paddleboards on the roof of a camper, you might have to take them off. Toilets are accessed with a bank card. Our children love this beach. It’s easy to get to with the little ones and is very family-friendly whilst not being too busy.

This beach is closer to Paignton, we have never been as we were told it is very busy. You could give it a try though…

Lovely in the winter. Very busy in the summer but if you leave early and get there before the crowds it’s a great beach. Be warned there is only one road in and one road out so if you get caught in the tourist traffic it takes ages to get into the car park. You can see Burgh island from the beach. At low tide, the sea goes really far out and you can walk on the sand for ages. Great for toddlers to splash in.

Brixham Harbour is great for a stroll, fish and chips, ice cream, a spot of crabbing. The annual festival, held in Brixham takes place over the Early May Bank Holiday weekend, is a swashbuckling mix of seaside shenanigans and pirate-themed fun for all the family. Billed as "the annual gathering of the world's most infamous pirates and lowly scallywags.”

You can access Paignton by bus or car. The bus goes from the central car park in Brixham and takes about 10 mins. Paignton has a lot for children to do, sweet shops, arcades, a park on the beach with trampolines, bouncy castles & slides and a funfair. It gets busy in the summer but is good entertainment for little ones. There are some pubs on the beachfront with playgrounds in, the food is average but at least you can have a drink whilst the kids play.

You can get the ferry across to Dartmouth from Kingswear or drive around. It is a beautiful town, a really nice day out with lots of restaurants and cafes. Our favourite café for late morning breakfast is Alfresco’s, book as they get very busy. They have a famous crabbing competition in late August as part of the regatta.

A half-hour drive away, Totnes is a really lovely town full of independent shops, there is a market on Saturdays and a pottery painting place called China Blue that has a really nice café with delicious food. Good entertainment for the kids and a nice lunch afterwards.

This is one of the best and easiest local walks you can do. It does not take long to get there and is easy with children. There is a café at the top that does nice food. You can sit outside in the summer.

Family fun

A really fun day out for the whole family, if you like theme parks. There are lots of rides and things to do for the older and younger. In the summer you do have to queue but stick around until the end of the day when everyone goes home and you can usually go on your favourite a few times over. There is a small zoo, mini-golf, adventure playgrounds, a paddling pool for toddlers and an indoor play centre. Loads of entertainment.

The zoo is good, unfortunately when we went all the animals seemed to be asleep or in the far corners of their enclosures. Some things like the crocodiles were closed due to COVID and their viewing platforms being indoors. Hopefully as restrictions ease these will exhibits will open up.

Sightseeing

Greenway and Coleton Fishacre and easy to get to by car and completely worth a visit. The houses are stunning and the gardens and walks, brilliant. Coleton is very hilly so not great for wheel chair or buggy access although there are some flatter bits if you ask at reception.

Fish restaurant. The amazing location above Brixham’s outdoor pool. Only has a few tables so again book early. You can walk or there is a little car park that you can park in, drive past the breakwater towards Berry head and it will be on your left. Big emphasis on local fish.
