Instead, they lived three miles north in a cottage where he was surrounded by an encampment of injured soldiers returning from The Civil War, and where his horseback commute took him past contraband camps of runaway slaves. This historic house requires you to book a tour, but it’s so well done, because they use the place as an opportunity to tell extraordinary stories of Lincoln the man.
