SIGHTSEEING in BODRUM

Bodrum Castle (Turkish: Bodrum Kalesi) a.k.a. Castle of St. Peter is a historical fortification located in southwest Turkey in the port city of Bodrum, built from 1402 onwards, by the Knights of St John as the Castle of St. Peter or Petronium. A transnational effort, it has four towers known as the English, French, German, and Italian towers, bearing the names of the nations responsible for their construction. The castle was completed in the late 15th century, only to be taken over by the Islamic Ottoman Empire in 1523. The chapel was converted to a mosque, and a minaret was added. The castle remained under the empire for almost 400 years. After remaining empty following World War I, in the early 1960s, the castle became the home for the award-winning Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology (see below). The Myndos Gate is situated at the eastern part of Bodrum, between central Bodrum and Gumbet, on the main road. It was constructed 4th century B.C. and one of the popular historical sites on the Bodrum peninsula. It was the entrance gate to the ancient city of Halicarnassus on the west. When Alexander the Great has come for the city’s invasion, he was unable to pass this deep, broad trench in front of the gate. The Myndos Gate is the only surviving monumental gate of the 7 km. long ancient city wall of Halikarnassos. The city walls are the most important remains of the city of Halicarnassus. The gate can clearly be seen with its two towers. You’ll find three entrances to the courtyard of the gateway. The gateway to the east part of the courtyard leads to the ancient city of Bodrum.
