City/town information

A small town on the Sacramento River, about 10 minutes frm the house. This is my goto place for quick supplies. They have two public docks and a few interesting businesses. There is also a historic Japan town, which is the lettered streets (A, B, C, etc).

Isleton has a cute historic main street, and a lovely public wharf. On the weekends they sometimes run a farmer's market in the wharf parking lot. The back side of the town is not that interesting. But if you are looking for things to see main street is fun. There are also several cannabis dispensaries in town.

Neighborhoods

Locke is America's best preserved rural chinatown. Many original features are still in place. There is a very cute main street with shops and places to eat. Go wander the unpaved streets and alleyways, and eat from the many street fruit trees. There is a small boarding house museum which is part of the state parks system. Technically Locke is a neighborhood in Walnut Grove.

Food scene

Many people have told me that they have enjoyed eating here. It hasis a little bit of a biker bar vibe, but I'm told that the food is pretty good. No outdoor seating.

Giusti's have nice outside seating, and serve hearty American-Italian food. I eat here often. If you have a boat, you can tie up at their dock. Check in with the hostess (inside) before sitting down outside. CASH ONLY - but they have an ATM.

Tony's has great steaks. Unexpectedly, surprisingly good steaks. The ambiance is just okay. They have an outside seating area that is basically a fenced in dirt yard with tables - nothing special. But the steaks make it worth it. CASH ONLY - but they have an ATM.

My favorite restaurant in the area. It's clean, the staff wears masks, the service and food is good.

One of the better Chinese restaurants in the area. Not comparable to anything in a metro chinatown, but pretty good for the Delta. They wear masks and take covid seriously.

Groceries and Suppies

Big Store is our local convenience store. They have a little bit of everything, including a butcher shop. They also have good homemade prepared food: burritos, tortas, and roasted chicken. Martha, the owner, is super nice and knowledgeable about the area. If you need something fast, this is the place to go. It's also a good place to snag lunch to take on the road.

Great local organic produce stand. Selection varies by the season, but this is the place to come for your veggies -- don't even thing about going to the local stores. Everything is on the honor system, so bring small bills to put into the cash box.

If you are looking for a supermarket, Lira's is the closest one. They have most of what you need here.

Sightseeing

A hidden gem of a park, behind the town of Locke. From here you can get an idea of what the area was like before the levees were built -- when the Delta was undeveloped marsh.

They have amazing iron work and metal art. If you want to buy a one-of-a-kind iron fence, they will make it for you. Definitely worth a stop in. It's in the old Walnut Grove theater. Only open on weekends.,

Most of this island is under the control of the Nature Conservancy, and it is a fantastic place to birdwatch during the late fall and winter. Sandhill cranes stop here to winter, and many other species pass through during migration,.

Boat Services

The nearest boat ramp to our house. $20 to launch, but it's only $10 if you are just launching and not parking your traler there. They sell food and drinks, and while it's not quite a bar, you can hang out there and socialize if you like.

Wineries

Visit and taste wine from 8 different local wineries. Clarksburg is one of the Delta's most recognize wine producing areas. The sugar mill is a good place to start because you can enjoy many different producers in one place. It's about 30 minutes from the house -- not the closest winery, but start here and work your way back.
