In 1899 Goichi Hanato came to Hawaii from Japan and opened a store and tofu shop in Kona, Hawaii. He married a picture bride in 1905 and their daughter Mary Shizuko took over the store in 1928. Ice cream was a specialty and when ice was trucked in from Hilo, Mary and husband Fumio Teshima would grind the blocks at night by the light of kerosene lamps. During WWII when GIs came for the ice cream, they taught her how to make hamburgers. The store evolved into a restaurant with a focus on Japanese and local Hawaiian cuisine in 1957. Mary’s secret to success was to keep the restaurant intimate and focus on customers. Reviews by diners and professional reviewers rate it among the best in Kona. They call it a gem with addictive shrimp tempura and sukiyaki.

A place of refuge and royal grounds south of Kealakekua Bay Located at Honaunau Bay in South Kona, Puuhonua o Honaunau immerses you in Hawaiian culture. This 180-acre national historic park was once the home of royal grounds and a place of refuge for ancient Hawaiian lawbreakers. Kapu, or sacred laws, were of utmost importance to Hawaiian culture and the breaking of kapu had its consequences, including death. If one were to break kapu, their only chance for survival was to evade his pursuers and make it to a puuhonua, or a sacred place of refuge. Once there, a ceremony of absolution would take place and the one who broke kapu would be able to return to society. Hundreds of years old yet beautifully restored, Puuhonua o Honaunau remains one of Hawaii's most sacred historic places. Follow the park and map and take a self-guided walking tour and explore the grounds including the Great Wall, standing 12-feet high and 18-feet thick. Fierce kii, or wooden images of gods, guard the Hale o Keawe Heiau, a sacred temple that housed the bones of 23 alii (chiefs). A black lava rock shoreline hindered those who broke kapu from approaching by sea.

The Catholic church has been a part of life in South Kona since 1842. The first church was located on the shore of Honaunau near the City of Refuge and was known as St. Francis Regis chapel. By the mid 1880’s most of the folks had moved away from the beach to the cooler climate and more fertile soil to be found a bit higher on the slopes of Mauna Loa. Father John Berchmans Velghe, A Sacred Hearts father from Belgium, arrived in 1899 and decided to follow the local residents up the mountain slope. The folks dismantled the church and with the help of mules, moved it to its present location.
