This beautiful park is one of my and my girlfriend’s favorite places. The most enormous gator in captivity that I’ve ever heard of is kept here. It’s incredible to see it up close. But the best feature is getting to take the row boats around the alligator sanctuary. If you stay quiet with your eyes open, you’ll surely see some magnificent animals in the wild. It’s also a fun fact that some movies, including ‘The Notebook’ and Mel Gibson’s ‘The Patriot’ were filmed there.

Anyone’s first time in Charleston needs to include at least a quick visit to the Battery. It’s right in the harbor, on the very edge of the downtown peninsula. If the weather is nice, take a relaxing stroll along the water and through the adjacent parks. It’s close by plenty of bars and restaurants; so it’s nice to enjoy right before or after dinner if you can catch the sunset there.

This brunch spot is only open mornings and early afternoons, and you will want to go early if you want to beat the crowd. You can’t go wrong with any of the rotating specials, breakfast burritos, Mexican or Veggie hash, or any sort of classic southern breakfast food like shrimp and grits or chicken and waffles. This spot is right in park circle, just a few minutes away from the house; but I would confidently say that this brunch rivals that of any downtown place for a fraction of the price.

Shem creek has a handful of restaurants packed into this waterway. Although all of the spots out there have gorgeous views of the creek, I’ve found that Mill Street is a good balance of delicious southern food and lower wait times to get a table.
