Neighbourhoods
Laugardalur area is Reykjavik’s major sports and recreation center. This green valley is named after its geothermal heat, the little hot springs where the first habitants of Reykjavík would wash their clothes before the time of plumbing and machines. So in the name Laugardalur, laug means hot spring and dalur means valley.
The valley has a botanical garden, free of entrance, with a greenhouse restaurant that is open during the summertime called Flora bistro. There is a family park, open during summer and a petting zoo, open all year with Icelandic farm animals and some other small exotic ones. There is an ice-skating hall and two big gyms in the valley, Hreyfing and WorldClass. There is an out and -indoor swimmingpool called Laugardalslaug, offering variety of hot tubs in different temperatures and my favourite one is with heated seawater. It is always so rejuvenating to go to the pool, especially in the winter, just soaking in the warm water with the chilling air around you, or even a snowflake on your head. Then there is the camping site with the family friendly cafe Dalur and the Hot Dog stand next to the pool is a quick but fulfilling fix for a meal when time is running out.
This neighbourhood is very central in the Reykjavik area so everything is quite easily accessible from there, whether it is the city centre the shopping malls or major highways out of the city.
In the northeast corner of the Valley is a little shopping centre with a grocery shop offering a remarkable selection of Asian which is known to have the longest opening hours during Christmas. There is a nice bakery/coffee house called Passion with everything prepared and baked on location. They offer free WiFi and organic coffee and people come from far away for their sourdough bread. There is an Icecream store called Huppa with wonderful real dairy icecream, my favorite is a mix with real expresso and strawberries in it. There is a beauty parlour, a Thai restaurant that specialises in Pad-Thai and a craft store Farvi, specialising in print work and art, selling unique souvenirs.
Glæsibær shopping Center is only 10 minutes walk to the southeast corner of the valley. It was the first attempt to a mall in Iceland and has nice shops a health clinic a pharmacy, a geeky store called Nexus offering everything related to board games, roleplay games and sci-fi and various courses on the subjects. There is an optic store called Sjón selling various quality designs of glasses and shades, even retro frames from the sixties and eighties, there is a mini market, a pub with screens to watch sports events, my favourite sushi restaurant called Tokyo and an Indian based health food restaurant called Saffran.
A little further is Skeifan, industrial area with all sorts of shops, markets and services, the most popular being the sportswear shop called 66*north with Icelandic outdoor clothing. Gló a popular health food restaurant with vegan choices and Bread and co. My favourite place in Skeifan is YogaShala the best yoga room in town with a wonderful view in all directions. There is also Spilavinir a great game store with a coffee shop where you can play board games with your friends and family.
