THE CLASSICS

These bars and restaurants are quintessentially Minnesota. They all offer a storied history and great food and drinks.
This is the classic Minnesota dining experience. The storied history began in the 1930s when Bar Harbor was a popular nightspot and casino. Yes gambling right here in Brainerd! At the time, gambling was illegal but Minnesota had no laws for enforcement. For many years, Bar Harbor was an off-the-beaten-path drinking and gambling spot with no restaurant, only slot machines, card dealers and bartenders. In 1946 Minnesota Governor Luther Youngdahl was shocked to find out there was gambling activity occurring at places like Bar Harbor and Breezy Point. Legislation banning gambling was enacted soon after. Bar Harbor responded by closing down the casino and installing a fine restaurant and a dance floor. Owner Erv Anderson brought in big bands like Woody Herman and Duke Ellington. Soon Bar Harbor became the place to be and be seen. The Supper Club went through many changes in its near-century existence. Anderson, the original owner, sold it in 2012 to John Allen. Allen, a long-time Brainerd investor, completely remodeled the restaurant and restored its early shine as a first-class establishment focused on serving high-quality food, atmosphere and service. Our family has been going to Bar Harbor for many generations and have witnessed it's ups and downs. As of the summer of 2021, we are happy to say it is back to its storied glory serving fine food and fine cocktails.

There are many reasons to go to Grand VIew Lodge. One of our favorites is to have dinner at Char Steakhouse. It is the lodge's steakhouse, as the name implies, and it fits the bill. The dining room is a gathering place with a massive fireplace, log construction and cowhide banquettes. The steaks and fish are prepared smoked, seared, roasted or grilled. A full cocktail, wine and beer list. The atmosphere of this lodge steakhouse is as you'd expect, woody, warm interior; roaring fireplaces in winter and cool cocktails in the summer. The lodge is another gem in the Brainerd Lakes area with a historic century-long story.

FOR FOODIES

A relatively new addition to the restaurant scene in Nisswa (15 minutes from the cabin) is the Main Street Ale House. This place is proving to be a welcome newcomer. Great food for lunch and dinner, with an extensive drink menu specializing in more than 30 Minnesota brews on tap. Their food menu is no less impressive with killer burgers, sandwiches and main entrees including Roasted Confit Duck, Pan-fried Walleye and Blackened Ribeye. Don't miss this place.
