Beaches/ Coves

Poldhu Cove, which translates to Blackpool Cove, is a lovely family-friendly west-facing sandy beach, suitable for lots of activities from building sand castles to beach volleyball and great for swimming, surfing and bodyboarding (you can hire all the items from our shop). Lifeguards man the beach between May to September. A local favourite is the Poldhu Beach Cafe, with delicious snacks, hot drinks, cakes and light food, open all year round. If interested in watersports, check out the Dan Joel Surf School for onsite lessons by checking out his website. A few hundred metres along the southern cliff (Angrouse Cliff) lies the monument to the great inventor Marconi who sent the first wireless signal. Around a 20-minute walk from The Loft, alternatively, a National Trust car park services the beach with great access for buggies and wheelchairs straight onto the beach. There are also public toilets onsite. Liz's Tip - Walk down to the beach along the coast path and then choose the number 34 Firstbus from Poldu Cove to Mullion Church Town. Note that phone signal on the beach is non existent.

Polurrian Cove is located just beyond the headland to the north of the little harbour at Mullion Cove. It is definitely worth making the walk, given there is no local car park. It will take you about 15 minutes from The Loft to walk, down a nice back path. The beach here is quite large at low tide when a fine expanse of golden sand is revealed. The high cliffs that flank the beach provide some shelter from the breeze, although the west-facing aspect means it can come straight off the sea. This also means the beach picks up Atlantic swells often making for good surfing. During the summer months there is a lifeguard service - but only at weekends. So if you do fancy a dip take care or make sure it is on a weekend during the summer holidays. There isn't a great deal in terms of facilities (no toilet/cafe/car park) at Polurrian Cove itself, so can be a lot quieter. Liz's Tip - This beach is not suitable for pushchairs as the path is very rocky.

The dramatic Mullion Cove is a must. It is owned by the National Trust and has a pretty working harbour, protected from the winter gales by stout sea walls. During low tide, a nice sandy beach is exposed and during high tide, children will often jump off the harbour wall into the sheltered water below. Walks along the cliffs are well worth the effort. There are some stunning views from the coastal footpath. There is a small cafe with toilets in the cove and up the hill, stands The Mullion Cove Hotel, home to the Atlantic View restaurant and Mullion Cove Spa. There is parking a short walk away, alternatively walking from The Loft will take you about 20 minutes. Liz's Tip - After passing the chocolate factory, just down the road there is the larger carpark on your left, and a few 100m away a smaller on your right. These are the last parking opportunities. Then walk down to the cove.

The National Trust owned beach of Gunwalloe sits at the base of the Lizard Peninsula. It is a pretty little cove with a good sized stretch of golden sand backed by gently sloping grassy dunes. Perhaps the most notable feature of Gunwalloe beach though, is the little church tucked away at the northern end. The church is where the beach gets both its name. Named after the early Breton missionary, St Winwaloe, it is quite a peculiar little building. Unlike most churches, the squat little bell tower is actually separate from the main church. There is reputed to be lost Spanish treasure just around the headland at neighbouring Dollar Cove. The local farm runs a small kiosk serving ice creams, tea, coffee and sandwiches and open throughout the summer months. There are toilets located a short walk from the National Trust car park.

Kennack Sands sits on the more sheltered eastern side of the Lizard Peninsula, not far from the tip. Despite its fairly remote location it is very popular - testimony to what a superb family beach this is. With masses of sand (at low tide), a stream and rock pools a plenty kids love Kennack Sands. There are also plenty of facilities including toilets and a cafe right by the beach to make your visit easier. With its south easterly aspect Kennack Sands is often quite sheltered from the wind, and considerably warmer than west coast beaches. This also means it can be a popular option for surfers when everywhere else is too windy. Most of the summer though it is a great spot for learning to surf. Again lifeguards service this beach through the summer and at weekends throughout other periods of the year.

Famous for its white sandy beach and turquoise water, this Cove is popular with locals and holidaymakers alike. You will need to drive to this beach, around 5-10 mins away, and a National Trust Car Park services the area. The beach is about a 10 minute walk from the Car Park and access down to the sandy beach can be rocky and difficult to navigate with a less confident adult or wheelchair. There is a cafe with toilets situated close to the beach with great views and wheelchair/pushchair accessible if worried about access down onto the beach itself. If you're planning a trip, we'd recommend getting there early, the car park can be full by 11am in summer months and so if looking for privacy or uninterrupted views, this may not be the place for you in the summer.

Without a doubt, the huge stretch of white sand is the selling point of Praa Sands. Backed by undulating dunes and leading out to sparkling azure waters, this beach is a true Cornish idyll. The sand is such a brilliant white due to the seashells on the beach being pulverised by wave action over millions of years, giving off a glittery, sparkling appearance. The mile-long beach has something for everybody. Water sports are a big thing, especially surfing due to the wave quality, but if you don't fancy surfing, Global Boarders offers guided paddle board lessons and coasteering adventures. A beautifully located restaurant, Sandbar, services the beach with it's traditional pub grub, light bites and snacks. This beach is just a short walk from the car park, ideal if you have tiny tots and loads of equipment. There’s lifeguard cover too throughout the summer and on some weekends at other times of the year, which is one of the reasons why it’s so popular. Liz's Tip - Be warned the beach can almost disappear at high tide. Hire a bodyboard and wetsuit from us and head here for some great waves.

Head down the hill from Sennen and it’s not long before your view is full of sea and sunshine. Some days huge blue rollers head towards the shore making Sennen Cornwall’s most westerly surf hotspot, other days the tides out and the wide golden sands provide plenty of space for everyone to enjoy. The small harbour with its lifeboat station and art gallerys is great for those days when the sun is in hiding.

Local Villages

Featured on BBC1's Cornwall; This Fishing Life, Cadgwith is 5 miles from Mullion and is the fishing village that time forgot. Step back in time in this traditional Cornish village. The houses, lofts and cellars retain their 16th century charm with structures built from local stone or cob walls, many with thatched or slated roofs. On Friday evenings at the 400 year old Cadgwith Cove Inn you can enjoy traditional sea shanty singers similar to (but much better than) The Fisherman's Friends to further enhance local custom. During the summer, Cadgwith hosts friendly but competitive traditional Cornish gig racing events, from the pebbled beaches. Parking is at the top of the village, and you'll need to walk about 5 minutes downhill towards the heart of the village.

Porthleven is the most southerly working port in the United Kingdom and boasts a picturesque harbour, with some interesting old buildings. The harbour faces south west into the prevailing wind and consequently the harbour construction and sea walls are massive. Porthleven is large enough to cater for visitors whilst retaining the character of an unspoilt fishing village, with its granite harbour and pier and famous clock tower. The area has been inhabited for over 1000 years but the present village started with the construction of the harbour in 1811. One of the biggest selling points of Porthleven is it's character and the array of desirable restaurants and eateries. Our favourites are Amelies and The Square.

St Ives has been a busy fishing port since the Middle Ages and is believed to have been settled as early as the Bronze Age. The West Cornwall moors, which the town borders, are testament to this with their ancient field systems and numerous megalithic sites . Nowadays, the fishing has given way to tourism as the main industry. This initially came about after the extension of the railway and more recently with the opening of the Tate Gallery. Whilst it can be very very busy through the summer months, it's unique character and sandy beaches makes it a popular visiting spot, there are numerous little shops, galleries and alleyways to explore. Liz's Tip - I grew up in St Ives and absolutely LOVE the town. My best tip for you is to park at the Park and Ride in St Erth and take the scenic train to St Ives. No parking issues then.

Whilst Mullion is situated on the Lizard, The Lizard Point is a worthy visit with far stretching Atlantic Views, one of our favourite brunch spots, Wavecrest, and the Lizard Lighthouse and Heritage Centre. The Lizard Point is also officially the most Southerly Point in the UK and so a great photo opportunity. Liz's Tip - You can almost always see seals just below Wavecrest bobbing up and down in the water. More Info - www.nationaltrust.org.uk/lizard-point

Roskilly's has something for everyone. Take a tour around the milking parlour, seeing just how their delicious organic ice cream is made, alongside lots of other farmyard animals that live across the 200 acres. The Croust House Restaurant serves delicious breakfasts and lunches, including full english breakfasts to salad bowls and pizzas. Finally the large lake and scenic walks can turn this excursion into a whole day event, oh and we can't forget the on site ice cream parlour! Liz's Tip - A day out with young kids but for me a visit to the cafe and an ice-cream works just fine. On the way out of Roskillys take the left turn to Coverack, a beautiful coastal village and fishing port. Park as soon as you spot a space. Walk along to the fishing harbour and have a drink at the Paris Hotel. More Info - www.roskillys.co.uk

Whilst a little further down the coast, The Minack Theatre is Cornwall's world famous open-air theatre is a worthy mention. Carved into the granite cliff and set in glorious gardens overlooking the spectacular panorama of Porthcurno Bay. From above it looks as though some wandering Greeks, two thousand years ago, had carved a theatre into the granite cliffs of Porthcurno, Cornwall. The summer theatre season runs from May to September presenting drama, musicals and opera in this most dramatic of settings. Given its location, we recommend pairing this in with a trip to the iconic Lands End Landmark, given it's popularity we recommend booking parking and tickets in advance. Liz's Tip - You MUST book. If your looking for a special day trip, why not consider a trip to the Isles of Scilly, a beautiful archipelago off the southwestern tip of Cornwall. The Isles of Scilly offer a certain quality of life - simpler, kinder and more peaceful, with 2,200 people calling it their home. There are five inhabited islands - St. Mary's, Tresco, St. Martin's, Bryher and St. Agnes plus countless uninhabited ones to explore. Each island has its distinct characteristics. Scilly also boasts an incredible ancient history and archaeology, alongside sweeping sea views and rugged undeveloped coasts. Out at sea, there are incredible shipwrecks and amazing wildlife. It's an experience to be remembered and whether you choose to catch a ferry or fly, it'll make a magical memory. Once you arrive there is plenty to do from horse riding to walking the coast or hiring a bike and cycling around, stopping off at local cafe's to experience the fresh catch. Liz's Tip - Every local school takes a school trip to the Isles of Scilly and every school trip has a child that throws up on the Scillonian Ferry. That was me so remember to take your seasickness tablets, or just fly. More Info - www.visitislesofscilly.com for more information and how to get there.

Recommend Dinner. Situated in Mullion, this Atlantic view restaurant is a special place to enjoy a lovely dinner. With a fantastic coastal location, premium quality fish and seafood are always prominent on the menus. From local fishing boats on the Lizard to Helford River oysters, it could not be any fresher. They also serve excellent dishes for those less keen on the sea, however, from prime steak to exceptional vegan and vegetarian cuisine. The choice is all yours. Recommend Dinner. Overlooking the picturesque fishing harbour of Porthleven, Amélie is a restaurant inspired by the sunshine of the Mediterranean and the beauty of the Cornish coast. It is the perfect place to stop and savour friendly, informal dining whilst exploring this pretty village. Take your time, unwind, and enjoy the view. Visitors can dine on lobster plucked fresh from the waves, or tuck into one of their famous burgers. Liz's Tip - The ambiance and views are fantastic. More Info - www.ameliesporthleven.co.uk
Recommend Dinner. Enjoy a special evening with great food. Kota, meaning ‘shellfish’ in Maori, (chef Jude is half Maori, half Chinese Malay) is set in a 300 year old building, right on the harbour front of the historic village of Porthleven. From here, Jude works his culinary magic on the best local produce using his signature Asian twist. Perfectly positioned on the Harbour Head in the idyllic fishing port of Porthleven and awarded 4* by the AA. Liz's Tips - The tasting menu was lovely, although the blue cheese ice cream was not for my palate. More Info - www. kotarestaurant.co.uk and bookings

The National Maritime Museum provides an interactive display of boats and their various functions in industry and recreation. The National Maritime Museum is well placed in an ideal position overlooking Falmouth harbour and the busy Carrick Roads shipping area. The maritime heritage exhibition is presented on three floors in twelve impressive galleries, each of which focuses on a different aspect of industry, work or communications. A couple of our favourite restaurants, The Cove, Hooked on the Rocks and The Shed are located in Falmouth so it's a great way to make a day of it.
