Sightseeing

located in Bangkok's poorest neighborhood, the Klong Toey 24 hour market is a sprawling, bustling, sometimes nauseating but always memorable wet market where locals go to buy everything food-related. Highly recommended for an afternoon trip either for sightseeing or stocking up on the cheapest and freshest fruits and veggies in town while also supporting the local people and culture.

Bangkok's chinatown is located in what you could call "old town." West of any skytrain/metro lines (for now) and largely free from the development of central sukumvit, making this part of town excellent for seeing a more traditional way of BKK city life. Also if interested, ask me about how to get to Charoen Chai neighborhood, one of the oldest and semi-hidden communities in BKK that is currently threatened by MRT line development.

While only partially a floating market, and open only on weekends, a trip to Bang Nam Phueng, and it's surrounding area, named "Prapadang" makes for a great day trip. Prapadang, little known to tourists and even some locals- is known as the "Green Lungs" of Bangkok- a massive expanse of undeveloped jungle and greenspace located surprisingly inside BKK metro area. Popular activities are bicycle tours and a visit to the aforementioned floating market. To get there, take a taxi or tuk-tuk to either the "Klong Toey temple" or "Klong toey Pier" as the pier is behind the temple. At the pier there is a ferry that carries you for a short ride over the chao praya river for 20 baht per person. Once on prapadaeng there are a few bicycle rental shops with simple bikes going for 100 baht a day.

historically significant as BKK's oldest red light district, Patpong is also home to the oldest bar in the city, The Madrid, as well as a bustling night market. Not uncommon to see families of tourists with children walking the market in the center, Patpong has become somewhat of a mainstream tourism spot as well as a nightlife destination. If going for nightlife, one will find a much more interesting, creative array of "gogo bars" than are on offer in Cowboy and Nana, Many of the bars in patpong retain their original 60's decoration and aesthetic, and some such as the S&M Club, Black Pagoda, My Old Other Office and the nearby Boyz Town (gay district) bring an eccentric and creative side

Parks & Nature

smaller than the more well-known Lumpini Park, Benjasiri is only 15-20 mins walk away or a short ride on the BTS to Phrom Pong. A very peaceful, beautifully landscaped park for a nice place to run, play basketball or get a quick workout at the free, but basic outdoor gym. Go during work hours and you'll probably have the place to yourself.

Entertainment & Activities

The "Train Night Market" or "Talod Rot Fai" as it is more commonly known in Thai, is a large outdoor night market very popular with younger Thais and expats. Primarily a market selling "vintage" style goods/clothing etc but also containing a very large, food-truck style food scene as well as creative pop-up bars and live music. Hours are evening (around 6 or 7 i believe) to midnight. Located behind Esplanade Mall on Ratchada road. To get there via public transport, walk or take the BTS one stop east to Asoke station. From there take the MRT to Thailand Cultural Center station and you'll easily see Esplanade Mall w/ the night market behind it.

quirky, small museum showcasing the history of Thai labor rights with an emphasis on WW2 and 20th century. Incredibly interesting and run by a sweet, accommodating Thai family. Free admission and free poster with your visit! donations encouraged

Last of the low-key, old school Bangkok beer bar plazas, this hodgepodge congregation of locally owned, small bars is a great place to experience the quickly disappearing nightlife of Sukumvit's past.

Located in a small creative district in old town, ToT is a small, eccentrically decorated, artsy, hipster bar inside of an early 20th century shophouse. Mostly younger, western expat crowd. Definitely off the tourism radar. Drinks are pricey for BKK standards- about 250-350 for cocktails and 150+ for beer.
