Neighborhoods

Kihei is the most fun little beach town with so much to offer. There are several fun local restaurants, shops as well as many great shave ice places, you can't go wrong with any of them, lots of it is walking distance from the condo. The best part for me is the 3 Kamaole beaches. They are some of the most fun, beautiful beaches on the island. During whale season you can see whales breech from the shore. Spend the day on the beach and snorkel, boogie board, swim, sunbath, and watch the most amazing sunsets. When you are watching the sunset, be sure to listen for the sound of the conch, say goodbye and give gratitude for the beautiful day that just passed.

My favorite beaches

This is a stunning beach, known to the locals as "big beach" It has some incredible shorebreak waves so you have to be careful, very careful, if you choose to go out. It is a great beach to hang at for a few hours and watch the locals handle those waves!

Waianapanapa State Park is one of my favorite places. It is not easy getting here but there is a lot to see and do. First stop at any fruit stand along the way and get fresh fruit or homemade bread, it is the best. Once at the park, spend time on the beach, explore, see the sea cave, hike the trail.... it is beautiful. You have to make reservations to come to this beach so I recommend this way in advance. It is at approximately mile 32 on the Hana Highway.

Hookipa is a great place to stop, sit on the beach, read a book, just look out at the ocean or take a nap... don't be surprised when you wake up with a honu snoozing next to you. This is a great spot to just relax and watch whatever the ocean has in store for the day!

Sightseeing

I love this hike. It is like being on another planet, walking across so much lava. Be sure to take water. It is out and back so you can turn around at anytime. Hoapili Trail to Hanamanioa Point. Sightsee along the way.... just incredible. All the way to the South end of Maui you may see monk seals laying on the beach. Please don't disturb them, they are protected. Keep your distance and enjoy from afar.

In Kapalua just below the Ritz are the Dragon's Teeth, and just to the south of that is Oneloa Beach and the beginning of a great trail... make a day of it and have a great adventure.

This bay can have incredible snorkeling. Please respect the land you walk across to get to the bay. It is a little challenging getting in and out of the water but it can be so worth it. You could also try a snorkel boat tour to see it, look for the tours leaving Lahaina. Take a noodle or other flotation device if you are not a confident swimmer. And be sure to wear reef safe sunscreen anytime you enter the ocean.... PLEASE e'olu'olu

Fun activities

If you want to be on the water try an outrigger canoe. Kihei Canoe Club is the perfect way to have some fun, paddle and enjoy the water. Check out their website for "visitor paddle". You will not be disappointed.

Run the Maui Oceanfront Marathon in January.... here's how you do it. Sign up, train, travel and run! Afterwards reward yourself with a whale watch tour and a big meal! This race starts in Wailea and ends in Lahaina, almost the entire 26 miles is oceanfront, it is breath taking. I can say I have seen a whale breech while I was running a marathon... no kidding. And I watched the sunrise over the water at approximately mile 12.... its incredible.

Try stand-up paddling... some things you may encounter on your paddle... a huge smile, honu, a whale in the distance, a manta ray, flying fish, waves and a sense of calm. I only recommend this activity if you are a good swimmer, and know how to paddle, if you are just trying it out, just stay close in the bay, and ONLY go when the water is calm and there is NO wind. Or, take a lesson!
