The cathedral church "St. Al. Nevsky ”is considered a symbol of the Bulgarian capital. It is located in the center of Sofia, on the square of the same name, and the reflection of its golden domes attracts the eye from miles away. The temple was built in honor of the Russian Emperor Alexander II, also called "Tsar Liberator", whose army in 1878 liberated Bulgaria from five centuries of Ottoman rule. St. Alexander Nevsky, after whom the cathedral is named, was a Russian prince (1220-1263) - a great general and diplomat. He is a patron saint of the Russian Emperor Alexander II and is a symbol of Russian military glory.
The interior of the temple is unique - it impresses with its magnificent marble decoration, with frescoes and 82 icons by Bulgarian, Russian and Czech artists. The marble iconostasis, the royal and patriarchal throne and the pulpit are of the greatest interest. Another value is the mosaic panel with King Ferdinand (ruled 1887 - 1918) and Queen Eleanor. In the basement of the temple is the Crypt - with an icon collection, where you can see masterpieces of icon painting.
As a monument, the church has no parish and apart from the daily, Sunday and festive public worship, baptisms, weddings and funerals are not performed here, with some exceptions - the wedding of Tsar Boris III (reigned 1918-1943) in 1930 with Princess Giovanna Savoy, his funeral in 1943, as well as the funeral of Patriarch Cyril in 1971 and the great opera singer Boris Hristov in 1993.
