Village tips

The harbour is really cosy with great restaurants and Le Port is particularly good with a wide selection of tasty dishes. The ice cream shop, Artistico, is definitely worth a visit for delicious homemade Italian ice cream. Jump in the sea for a morning swim followed by breakfast from the bakery, Brødsnedkeren, also located in the harbour. For swimming with small kids we would recommend the beach we call "School beach" (the nearby schools often visit :) which is on the way to Espergærde harbour coming from Espergærde South. This beach is quite small and there are trees for pram shade in contrast to the large beach next to the harbour. If you are in the mood for pizza one day there are several options, our favorite in the harbour is Divina which also offers Italian craft beer on tap. The fish shop right on the waterfront is also a great lunch spot with locally sourced fish. Go for a stroll along the coast - and note that in Denmark all beaches are public so you are allowed to walk all along the coast and take a swim or have a picnic. It is also worth taking a walk in the lush Egebæksvang forest and here you will also find a couple of shelter spots to create small campfires. Espergærde Shopping center offers many good options including three supermarkets (Meny (mid range) and Netto (budget)), cheese shop, wine shop, clothes, pharmacies and interior shops (a favorite being Stokværk :)). There is also a great library where you can also find brochures etc. on local activities in Helsingør commune, which Espergærde is a part of. Try the typical Danish food "Smørrebrød" (open sandwiches) in the quaint Café Smørblomsten - it's very cosy and good value for money and the Social Grill which is great with small kids. For local takeaway options we would recommend: - Sushi Ichigo and Pizza Gastronomia in the shopping center

South of Espergærde you will find Humlebæk. Sletten Harbour in Humlebæk is a very cute little oasis with quaint small houses and a brilliant restaurant; Restaurant Sletten. This is a more pricey place, but definitely worth a visit and you will need to book a table in advance.  Two other great destinations in Humlebæk are Louisiana, the world famous modern art museum (www.louisiana.dk) is open most days 11:00 till 23:00. If you are travelling with kids they have an amazing three story section full of creative options for the little ones. The second option is Krogerup Avlsgård which is home to Årstiderne (www.aarstiderne.com/om-aarstiderne/aarstiderne-in-english), an organic meal delivery option widely used in Denmark. They produce and sell lots of organic fruit and vegetables along with coffee and cake/ice cream to go. It is a really lovely place to go and hang out and have a wander about the fields where you will also find small private plots which locals have rented to produce their own vegetables. It is a gorgeous walk across the fields from Espergærde (plot Sandvejen into google maps as a via point and it will point you in the right direction).

North of Espergærde you will find Helsingør/Elsinore. A nice place to visit on the way there is Flynderup Gård (http://helsingormuseer.dk/flynderupgard/) a beautiful, historical country house and farm with a variety of farm animals, a museum and little cafe serving old fashioned Danish food. They also offer picnic baskets :) Helsingør is a vibrant and interesting city full of history. Take a walk around the old city and visit Kronborg Castle. If you are keen for a bit of outdoor exercise try drop-in Pilates or Yoga run by Pilateshuset (https://www.instagram.com/pilateshuset/?hl=en) on prime picturesque spots. Food wise we can recommend the street food market in the old shipyard, Kagefryd for amazing cakes and Café Lagoni for a nice cup of coffee and lunch.

The beach here is a gorgeous, large, white sandy beach and is worth a day trip. Have breakfast in Café Albi's (https://www.visitnordsjaelland.dk/nordsjaelland/planlaeg-din-tur/albis-kaffebar-gdk1078478) where the owners live in the house and you can buy the secondhand furniture. Have street food dinner in the "Det fedtede hjørne" (The Greasy Corner) - great food and vibe. If you have time take a stroll in Hornbæk Plantation, a lovely forest.

Sightseeing

A word on the region we live in from a cultural perspective.  In North Sealand, we have three of Northern Europe’s most beautiful castles. This is where the kings demonstrated their power and wealth and showed everyone that Denmark was an influential country. This is why we call it Royal North Sealand.  Kongernes Nordsjælland is a national park in the northern region of the island of Zealand which opened in 2018.  Kronborg in Helsingør is one of Northern Europe’s finest Renaissance castles. It is world-famous as Hamlet’s and Shakespeare’s castle and is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. I can recommend doing an escape room in the castle . Fredensborg Palace is the regents most used residence. The beautiful 18th-century baroque palace in Fredensborg was built as a hunting palace for Frederik IV and is today often the setting for large official state visits and family events in the royal family.

Esrum Sø, the second largest lake in the country, is noted for its clean waters, its recreational facilities and the 12th-century monastery of Esrum Abbey at its northern end. The park also includes the lakes of Arresø and Gurresø, the woodland of Tisvilde Hegn and will comprise a connected cultural and natural landscape of coast, heath, forest and rural areas.

World class pilates and fantastic team of instructors. It is my favorite training spot and during the summer there is drop-in outdoor pilates in Helsingør.
