Dunluce Castle is a now-ruined medieval castle in Northern Ireland, the seat of Clan McDonnell. It is located on the edge of a basalt outcropping in County Antrim, and is accessible via a bridge connecting it to the mainland. The castle is surrounded by extremely steep drops on either side, which may have been an important factor to the early Christians and Vikings who were drawn to this place where an early Irish fort once stood.

Along the north coast of Ireland, where arctic storms rage against the jagged cliffs and where the crisp waters of the River Bush cut through volcanic rock, generations have passed down an ancient distilling tradition. Bushmills is named for the mills that made the barley and the River Bush, which remains the water source today. In the 1850s, the Crown imposed a tax on those distilling in Ireland through a tax on barley. Even then, malted barley was known throughout the world to make the finest whiskey, known as “pure malt” whiskey. When only malted barley is used in distillation, and made at a single distillery, you have the very definition of “single malt” whiskey. That tax, however, forever changed Irish whiskey, as almost every Irish whiskey distillery began substituting corn or other more inferior grains for barley. To this day, the biggest and most infamous Irish blended whiskeys use only corn. Not Bushmills. Bushmills continues to distill malted barley and is the only Irish distillery time still using malted barley in all its whiskeys. We're not the best because we're the oldest, we're the oldest because we're the best. Colum Egan, Head Distiller

You’ve seen the scenic views and beautiful contours of Royal Portrush during the 2019 British Open. The terrain suits the requisite challenge for some of the world’s best golfers. Perhaps you’re even familiar with some of the history associated with the club and the country. But, inquisitive minds might be wondering, where exactly is Royal Portrush Golf Club? There are lots of way to approach answering that. It’s in Portrush (no surprise there), a city on the northern coast of Northern Ireland, in Country Antrim. Antrim is one of six counties that make up Northern Ireland. Portrush nudges the North Channel, which feeds into the North Sea. The city is just over an hour drive (60 miles northwest) of Belfast, Northern Ireland’s capital — which is just about an eight-hour flight from New York City. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, for those who might not have studied geography, and represents a small part of the island largely consumed by the Republic of Ireland, its southern contemporary.
