Tree House Area Guide

Food - Omaha

This is a summary to give you an idea of what is good, close and/or some of the fancy favorites of the area and some best kept secrets.
Breakfast/Lunch. This is the farthest away from the treehouse, but I would be wrong not list it as they have one of the best breakfast menu's around. Amazing baker items, i.e. cinnamon rolls, etc. It's a good place to hit early on in your stay as you can eat the leftovers you have for the rest of the stay!! When I was still a visitor in Omaha it was on my must stop list. Tip: It is VERY busy on Sundays so either plan around that, extra time for the wait, etc.

Classy brunch option in Omaha. Even after a fire in 2016 destroyed the original M’s, the Old Market classic is back; if you hadn’t heard about the fire, you wouldn’t know it happened when you’re dining there. Owner Anne Mellen restored the beloved spot down to the smallest details, and the menu got the same treatment. Its lahvosh crackers topped with a variety of items are popular, as are the crab cakes and other light entrees.

Get your fancy dinner on. It's the ultimate - Very Pricey but very nice environment for a special occasion. Reservations essential. Le Bouillon replaced one of the city’s oldest and well-regarded spots, the French Cafe. It’s carried on the tradition of French cuisine in downtown Omaha, but in a more modern way, with a raw bar, excellent tartines and a weekend punch special that’s always fresh and costs just $5 a cup. The French onion soup is stellar. Check out its sister, Howard Street Wine Merchant, which has lovely natural wines.

An Omaha classic -South Omaha dinner option a little farther from the house than most eateries. You can combine with trips to Zoo, Lauritzen Gardens, etc. Be sure your Google selects the one on South 27th. It's a fairly quick trip down to 7th Street then to I-29; I-80 and before you know it you're there. Attire is truly - be yourself. Some folks come fancy, others wear their blue jeans. The focus is on those good 'ol Nebraska steaks. The ambiance is dated - it is, afterall, the original Johnny's steakhouse. Prices are reasonable considering the type of food you're eating. You can pay more if you want a fancy ambiance and go to the Johnny's in west Omaha - it's a long way to go - but for me that's much ado about nothin'. Give me the old Johnny's in South O. Character abounds. You also get a view of what were the old Omaha stock yards. A historical perspective that is a trip in and of itself. This is one of my Omaha favorites. This is an Omaha classic near the sites of Omaha’s historic Stockyards, Johnny’s is one of the city’s oldest steakhouses. Come for the kitschy bar and the lobby full of historic menus — take a look at those prices — and stay for the red meat and a Manhattan.

South Omaha. Good to combine with Zoo, Gardens, Joslyn venture. I LOVE this place. It's good ole South Omaha with a Capitol "O" Attire is - comfortable. I've gone fancy and in shorts after the Zoo. They were pleasant and fed me either way with some of the most downhome amazing Italian food you'll find. Last I checked (5/20) they offered takout, but call and check.

Night Life

Great music venue. Someone is always playing. Look up on their schedule and if it is even remotely interesting to you - GO. Great kickoff for an evening, or nice way to end, depending on the music. Admission is affordable. Two venue options in the place to set up for entertainment - large crowds and smaller more intimate draws. I have been to both and every time it was a wonderful and memorable experience. Seen some great talent with family, friends, and by myself all left me smiling and glad I went.

Something fun in Omaha- Frequently referred to as one of Omaha’s hidden gems, Wicked Rabbit is the archetypical, modern speak-easy and was dubbed “Omaha’s intimate speak-easy” by the Omaha Visitors Center. They serve creative, delicious Prohibition-era cocktails with a speak-easy feel and a semi-secret entrance. Just go through the Looking Glass Cigars & Spirits, tell the clerk the secret passphrase, and you’re in. Check out their Facebook page for details because they have no website

One of the city’s highest-end restaurants, The Boiler Room delivers on all fronts: atmosphere; one of Omaha’s biggest wine lists; and constantly creative cuisine coming from James Beard semifinalist Tim Nicholson. Stop in for a cocktail, if nothing else, and experience the interior designed by Omaha legends Mark and Vera Mercer (they also had a hand in creating V. Mertz and La Buvette).

Sightseeing

Monuments, sculptures, memorials and walking around park. Park is in downtown area near restaurants, etc. Spring/summer hosts farmers market. Hint: go in daylight early afternoon to enjoy it at its finest. I did picnic dinner there once by myself and, like most cities, the parks become a homeless magnet for the evening. No one that was aggressive, I just didn't want to have to deal with it by myself. The beauty of the park and the old "city square" feel worth the trip if you're looking for a relaxing afternoon -downtime.

Close to House. Oakland Avenue home of beautiful Historic houses - overlook of CB & Omaha metro - nice after dinner thing to do - or quick walkaround before dinner. Rumor is DON'T LOOK INTO THE STATUES EYES. However, it's a beautiful statue. It was a nice spiritual moment for me. Very close to house. From there to 100 block area in Council Bluffs or continue on into Omaha.
