Food scene

This is our favorite Vietnamese food in DC and we are lucky that we can walk here from our place! It is extremely casual - in the first floor of a row house with only a handful of tables inside (no alcohol sales here) - and service is efficient. They have fantastic/as-good-as-in-Hanoi bun cha (pork meatballs in garlicky broth with a side of noodles and fresh herbs and sprouts for dipping), which we have not found anywhere else in DC. The soursop smoothie with boba is also a nice treat. Bun DC just started serving pho (woo hoo!) and it also has bun bo hue, another type of Vietnamese noodle soup (its sister restaurant, Pho Viet, is also in our guidebook and is great for pho). Call for carry out (you can find their menu online) and it’ll be ready in about the 10 minutes it takes to walk there.

Really great Indian food, particularly the appetizers and the thali meals. We really like the bhel puri, keema pav, chicken saag, malai kofta, and any of the biryanis. There are several good restaurants on the same block!

Nice, casual Oaxacan restaurant with creative (not-just-margaritas) cocktails and great mole. The owners also own Taqueria Habanero up the street. Favorite dish when it’s on the menu is the pork ribs with mole negro. They serve everything with fresh-made tortillas!

Perpetually packed but the line moves fast and the bagels are awesome. Good for takeaway but if you don’t mind rubbing elbows with your neighbor, a spot usually opens up to dine in (*currently only online orders for pickup with limited seating on the patio, 8am-2pm daily*). They now have locations in Capitol Hill and Georgetown as well.

Feels like Japan when you step inside - we prefer happy hour and snacks at the bar (the hand-drawn menu is hyper-seasonal, but anything with fresh tuna is great and the kalbi is fantastic). Don’t sleep on the potato salad - it’s an izakaya staple and they do it very well when it’s on the menu. You can make reservations online for indoor dining (Tuesday-Saturday 5-9pm) or do same-day online ordering for take-out (3-8pm, also available for lunch 11am-2pm).

Our favorite DC ramen. In true Tokyo style, you line up here to wait for a table, which will likely be the large communal table that takes up most of the small basement space. Try the tonkotsu red or mild with black garlic oil - great depth of flavor in the broth. They have a limited selection of decent Japanese beers. From Memorial Day to Labor Day they serve absolutely delicious cold/no-broth ramen.

Great Filipino restaurant in Mt. They do brunch every day starting at 10am, with outdoor “streatery” seating available. Delicious BBQ and creative (and huge) sandwiches. When it’s available, the Gordon Bombay (with smoked duck confit and pork belly) is highly recommended! We also like the Burly Texican sandwich (brisket, pork belly, melted cheese and smashed avocado), mac and cheese and Brussels sprouts sides. Available for curbside pickup and delivery.

A large park just a few blocks from the Airbnb. Now a local hangout for dog walks and warm-weather picnics, the park used to be an army camp during the Civil War and has a rich history. On good-weather Sundays there is a drum circle in the upper park - starts around 3pm. Earlier on Sundays there are occasional pop-up jazz shows.

From mid-May to late August, locals walk down to the Mall on Fridays after work to enjoy live outdoor jazz in the sculpture garden. Arrive early (jazz is from 5:00-8:30pm), grab a spot on the ledge of the fountain so you can dip your feet in, and get a pitcher of sangria. Larger groups can bring blankets and set up picnics in the grass (BYO food is allowed but the guards will check bags for alcohol). The sculpture garden (and this part of the Mall in general) are easily accessible by metro - take green or yellow downtown to the Archives stop.

*Currently you need timed entry passes to access the Library: www.loc.gov/visit/ The most beautiful building in DC - combine this with visits to the Supreme Court and the Capitol. Make sure to get to the reading room viewing platform - there is often a line for this. A “village in the city,” this is one of DC’s most diverse neighborhoods and is a great place to walk and dine - particularly for those who have been to DC and have already seen most of the more-frequented tourist spots. Just up 16th from Meridian Hill Park, make a diagonal left on Mt. Pleasant St., the main drag. Our favorites on the street: Mt. Desert Island Ice Cream for dessert (blueberry sour cream crumble and lemon curd coriander streusel are our favorites!), Martha Dear for pizza, OKPB for speakeasy cocktails (if you’re going in what looks like a dentist’s office you’re in the right place - just ring the bell), Elle for coffee and pastries by day and dinner at night, Raven Grill for beers (this is a total dive), Suns Cinema for an indie theater experience, and Sabydee for hole-in-the-wall Laotian food (the Nam Kao/crispy rice salad is the way to go). At the top of the street, turn left on Park St. to see historic homes (this will also lead to Rock Creek Park if you are looking to hike).

This place gets a lot of hype, and for good reason. Named Best American Cocktail Bar in 2017, Columbia Room offers three distinct experiences for guests: the punch garden/outdoor deck, the Spirits Library inside with a la carte drink options, and the ticketed/reservations-only cocktail tasting menu in the private bar room. The cocktail tasting experience changes seasonally and is a real treat for visitors and locals alike. Columbia Room is accessible from Blagden Alley, where there are several bars and restaurants as well as graffiti art.

Rather than visiting the restaurant in this charming Dupont hotel (although brunch is very popular here), we highly recommend a cocktail in their bar/parlor - particularly on cold days so you can enjoy the fireplace. It’s like sitting in your living room, but fancier. They have live music on occasion.

Fun rum bar and distillery across from Union Market in NoMa. Nice for a casual drink after shopping or eating in or around the market (there is a lot of great casual food in the market, plus restaurant options if you want something more formal). They currently have outdoor patio seating and a “winter patio” that’s covered but open-air, and serve seasonal hot drinks in addition to their regular and frozen cocktails. For rum and allspice dram lovers, they have bottles for take-away that make great DC souvenirs and gifts.

Excellent for food as well, Bar Charley is a local favorite on the 18th street strip in north Dupont. They have tiki cocktails (some on tap), as well as other creative and traditional cocktails. Even during COVID, they are doing daily happy hour (until 6:30) and all-night happy hour on Mondays. They have recently expanded their outdoor dining area (limited indoor and bar seating with proof of vaccination required). Their sweet corn and jalapeño fritters are a wonderful snack to accompany your cocktails.

A nearby dive bar on the 11th St. bar and restaurant strip with plenty of outdoor seating and an underrated weekend brunch - first place we have seen macaroni and cheese pancakes! Decent bar food (fried chicken wrap is great), no-frills drinks (including a decent frozen margarita and frosé and a nice draft beer selection). Easiest to get one of the good seats on their well-spaced outdoor patio if you go close to opening time (11am for weekend brunch and 5pm the rest of the week, open every day), as this is a popular local hangout. Probably the place we most frequent - we love the staff and the neighborhood feel.
