Sightseeing

We love to visit beautiful Como house, have a stroll around the manicured gardens and visit the gorgeous cafe there. Como House was built in 1847 by Edward Eyre Williams and his wife Jessie Gibbon, both part of the elite of the colony at the time. They named the house after Lake Como in Italy, where he proposed to her, and the romance is reflected in the beautiful ‘mix of Australian Regency and the classic Italianate architecture.’ Since the Williams family lived here it has been sold on many times, before being bought by the Armytage family, where it stayed for over 95 years until it was handed over to the National Trust in 1959, who have endeavoured to restore both the house and the gardens to their original glory, making this an exciting and informative glimpse into Melbourne’s past.

Food scene

South Yarra is a bustling, upscale suburb with art deco apartments facing the Yarra, and well-preserved mansions like the 1847 Como House. Swanky boutiques, art galleries, cocktail lounges and eclectic bistros line busy Toorak Road and Chapel Street, while Prahran Market offers gourmet foodstuff. Nearby, the vast Royal Botanic Gardens is popular with joggers and picnickers.

Consejos sobre la ciudad

Train, trams and walking are great ways to get around

we like to walk into the city from our apartment along the many walking tracks taking in the beautiful botanical gardens and the Yarra river. Everyone is super friendly and the cafes and restaurants are some of the best on offer. Always pack for change of seasons. Summer can get really hot but nights can get cool so bring a light jacket.
