There are over 800 miles of trail in the national park, but less than 3 miles are paved. Laurel Falls Trail is the longest of four paved trails in the park. The trail was originally built to allow fire crews access to the Cove Mountain area in the event of a fire. Planning for the trail and a fire tower to be built at the top of Cove Mountain began in early 1930s. The trail was completed in 1932 at a cost of approximately $590. The fire tower was completed three years later.
By the early 1960s, Laurel Falls had become a popular hiking destination for visitors and erosion was taking a toll on the trail. As part of the 1963 Accelerated Works Projects grant to the Department of Interior, Laurel Falls Trail was reconditioned, graded and paved to halt the erosion.

We thoroughly enjoyed cling mans dome. It is only open for some of the year and closes for winter. It is a bit of a hike, especially if you have to carry your little ones like we did, but it was totally worth it. Even the parking lot has the most amazing views. The best views in the entire park as it is the highest elevation you can drive to.

We thoroughly enjoyed cling mans dome. It is only open for some of the year and closes for winter. Great waterfall you can easily get to even with kids. Very easy hike and family friendly hike behind the sugarlands visitor center.

Sugarland Valley Accessible TrailGreat paved trail half a mile hiking trail. It is a great place to see wildlife, a great place to see a beautiful creek, whats left of historic homesteads, and great for mobility needs such as strollers or wheelchairs!
If you enjoy history and want to see how log home steads were built in the area this is the perfect example. Gives you insight into how they lived in the GSMNP! Only a mile hike in total! Trail is kept up nicely, not a hard hike at all.

The Donut Friar in the village is a must. If you get there early it will just be you and the locals. And the proprietor is a super nice guy who will talk to you about which trails in the park are good right now.

Delicious food and absolutely excellent service. The menu has a lot to offer and the steaks are just as good as the seafood. One of the few places you can find snapper and swordfish. The desserts are also wonderful. I highly recommend the strawberry shortcake. Just a very nice, upscale and relaxing atmosphere.

If you’re not completely vegan, get the Banitza or Smoked Salmon Bruschetta (for those of us who are pescatarian). Let the chef know that you like to tweak your choice a bit. They’re happy to accommodate and they only serve local and seasonal good-for-you-food.
