The MAM has a great collection of both Montana and international artists and is FREE. It is about a 25-minute walk from the house.

Really interesting museum on the history of Missoula, which includes a walking tour of artifacts, such as old sawmills, railroads, and barracks from the Japanese internment camp. You would need a car or to take a taxi to this spot. It is a 15-minute drive from the house.

This is the Montana that you picture -- rolling hills, snow-capped mountains in the distance, and bison! This is a driving visit -- not many places to hike here. The drive is about 40 minutes from town.

Local hikes

Climbing up the "M" trail (Mount Sentinel) is a right of passage. Rock stars passing through town, runners doing hill training, college kids getting in their 10,000 steps, and families wanting a great view of Missoula have all made their way up this classic trail.

Another classic Missoula trail, the "L" stands for Loyola Sacred Heart school. How they got to put an "L" on Mount Jumbo is a mystery I remain pleasantly unaware of. All that matters is that you can grab some great views. This trail is closed for half of the year for elk grazing.

The Kim Williams trail runs right along the Clark Fork River, and is a great place to run, walk, bike, or amble. Dogs must be on leash.

This is one of my favorite hikes in town. It's got a couple different trailheads, one of which is just a 10-minute walk from the house. Dogs can roam free here.

Incredible mountain biking, day hikes, and jogging trails. The trails are closed annually to dogs from Dec. 1 through March 1. With the major trailhead only 4.5 miles north of Missoula, the 61,000 acres of glaciated topography in the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness (RNRAW) form Montana's premier urban wilderness, blending the best of both wilderness and civilization. Day use is by far the dominant form of recreation, largely due to a rapid increase in use by joggers and mountain bikers up both the main Rattlesnake Creek and Spring Gulch. Hunting and fishing are the traditional uses of the Rattlesnake Wilderness. The main Rattlesnake Creek is open to catch-and-release fishing above the mouth of Beeskove Creek. Many of the high lakes are periodically stocked. When snow conditions permit, the main Rattlesnake and side drainages are readily accessible to cross-country skiers. Missoula Nordic Ski Club offers some grooming of the Rattlesnake Recreation Area from the main trailhead to Franklin Bridge. There is a well established trail system in the Rattlesnake lower half affording opportunities for day trips or you may choose to travel further into the wilderness for overnight camping. Camping is allowed beyond the 3-mile radius from the Rattlesnake's main trail head. But remember no motorized vehicles or bicycles are allowed within the wilderness boundary.

Brunch spots

Vegans, gluten-intolerant, and meat-and-potato folks will all find something delicious at the Catalyst, where breakfast is served all day. I love the chilaquiles (the half order is plenty big)! Expect a wait.

It's good enough for Lyle Lovett (apparently it's one of his faves), so it should do alright for you! They're famous for their omelets--my fave is the sautéed veggie, garlic and cheddar. They're on the pricey side but you get a lot of food. Expect to wait 15 minutes.

I used to work at this spot -- and they're famous for their Sunday brunch for good reason! Expect a loud, bustling, and lively atmosphere. You'll likely have to wait 30 minutes but the food is top notch! Brunch is only served on Sunday.

I love Scotty's because people don't know that they have a killer brunch at reasonable prices! This restaurant is one of the nicest in town, but on Sundays, their brunch menu is downright affordable! I like Ike's omelet. No wait time.

Downhill skiing

Missoula's closest ski hill only has a few chairlifts, and yes, they break down a bunch, but the skiing is pretty fantastic. It's not a mountain for beginners. Fall lines are funky, the runs are steep and never groomed. And we like it that way. The lodge has a great selection of beer but is best known for its Bloody Marys and pizza. Be very careful driving up Snowbowl Road -- dangerous curves without guide rails. It's a 25-minute drive from the house.

Discovery is a family friendly mountain with enough blue and black runs to keep intermediate and advanced skiers happy for the day. Do not leave without eating one of their chocolate chip cookies. AMAZING.
